awesome, thanks! that's exactly what i was looking for.
ok, finally got a day that was both warm enough, not snowing, and i wasn't busy with other stuff. i've tested the dynamo, i got 13.0 at low idle and 37.0 at max RPM. so, while not perfectly to spec, seems that that's not really the problem. is there a way to test the regulator?
i did take the opportunity to clean my battery terminals (they weren't bad), and sprayed the dynamo and starter connections with electronics cleaner, and gave everything a bit of a scrub, so it was all clean and shiny (can't hurt)
i typically run 60 watts of lights (sometimes as many as 75w), plus a wiper so let's say typical load is 60-100 watts. that makes it 5-8 amps. so i shouldn't be having issues but after 2 hrs of running, my wiper stops working, and i need at least 12hrs on my battery minder to have enough to start again.
any ideas?
thanks
Consider buying a voltage display which would let you see what is happening all the time.
.
Ebay has all kinds. I suggest this one because it is shipped from USA and arrives quickly. The China ones are identical but take some time to arrive. $8.19.

Once you have established that your charging system is keeping the voltage levels up, or not doing so, dynamo's with more output may be an easy option.
Without having an ammeter in the circuit, relying on published current draws may be misleading you enough so that you are running just under the dynamo's output.
Remember, there may be solenoids on the engine using power. Some engine stop solenoids are powered while the engine is running.

good idea. would an ammeter be more helpful? (dynamo keeping up vs, not)
Hi. My Dynamo went out on the G2000. Bearings shot I am sure. I got a new one from Amazon and want to install it, but the wires aren't marked and look identical. Also every image of every Dynamo i saw advertised for this unit has what appears to be unidentifiable wiring. Meaning? It makes no difference how I reconnect the two wires from the Dynamo to the tractor? Thanks. SteveI suggested the voltmeter because it is cheap and very easy to install.
Ammeters can get tricky on where in the circuit to install as they have to show current flow in two directions.
If your charging system can keep the system voltage up, then you should be good. However, if it starts out at 14.2 volts and then, as you turn on lights, wiper(s), etc., you see the voltage drop to 12 or lower, you know you are loosing ground. Perhaps you can manage what is on to keep the voltage up. For example, only have the lights on pointing in the direction you are traveling while blowing.
It is like trying to keep your home in operation during a power outage with a 3,000 watt gas generator. You have to be turning circuits on and others off because your generator cannot run everything at the same time.
