About the BH77: I replaced the pin myself a few weeks ago... it's very easy.

You remove the securing bolt, and tap in the new pin with a rubber mallet (or in my case, a 2x4). That pushes out the old pin. Just make sure the pin is rotated so that the holes align with the frame holes for the the bolt, roughly, because it is hard to rotate once it is far in.

Then you re-install the nut and bolt (but not all the way tightly - there is supposed to be some clearance).

My dealer would have done it, but was happy to skip the few hours of driving required.

I kept the old bolt, but I plan to throw it in the recycling scrap pile...

Anyway... it's a trivial repair.

Mike:

Thanks. The dealer is going to be at the farm next door working on the AC on two big New Holland tractors. Then will just drive the 2 miles to my place. So it's easy for them and they offered.

Was yours replaced preventatively or did it break?

You sure have been busy with that B of yours, and I'm glad you had it to help the neighbors out.......... that is a good feeling all the way around. For that kind of work, you might want to think about adding the Kubota quick change or a skid steer quick change to your loader arms, and getting a set of forks. I added them to my B2620, and found them more useful than I ever imagined for handling logs, brush, rocks, and even pallets on occassion. :D I thought they were a bit expensive when I bought them at $200 + for the QA, and around 1K for the forks, but I never thought about the price again once I started using them.

Oh yea, you guys don't have rocks.......... wanna buy some?

Yes, I'll vouch for the forks too. I've moved logs, popped rocks out of the ground, set rocks, turned rocks around, planted trees, popped bushes out of the ground and transplanted them. You can just come up to a tree with a heavy root ball and pick it up. Oh, and put my generator in my pickup to loan to a friend. They are very handy and save your back from trying to shove things in the bucket. Plus the loader will lift more weight with them than the loader and with bucket will. They are nice but not cheap either.

Well, that took about 2 minutes. They undid the bolt holding the pin. Tapped it out, tapped the new one in. Greased the zirc to the pin a bunch. Then moved the BH arm in and out a few times. Took the old pin away and would not let me keep it. From an external examination of the pins they were the same shape, length, color, etc.. So, the problem must be a hardness or some sort of metal treatment that was deficient.

Does anyone know exactly what the issue with the pin was? I know from looking at their sheet that it only applied to BH77's with serial numbers in a certain range and mine was IN the range.

Well, I asked the dealer if the new pin was supposed to be 10 times stronger with space-age composites and what-not. He said yes.

He also said they had some units that had failed, and it wasn't pretty.

picking up logs with the forks

Those forks sure are handy! I swear that I need two tractors sometimes though, so I can use everything at once. :D :D Then I could have the box blade, and bucket on one, and the forks, and my chipper on the other.............. or maybe a backhoe......... Hey, maybe three tractors would be best, especially if I kept my Simplicity for mowing. I can see how you could get that problem pretty easy, especially if you lived close to a good dealer.
