Got it all installed....it took me longer to get the tools together than it did for the installation. Before I started taking anything apart I found out I didn't have a 1 3/8" socket that would fit the heater. No room for channel lock pliers or an adjustable wrench so it was off to NAPA. They didn't have a 1 3/8" in 1/2" drive, only 3/4" drive and of course no adapters in stock. But, they had a 36mm impact socket that fit with just a hair of play in it so I bought that.

Back home, clean drain pan under the tractor to catch any leaking coolant and put the hex socket to it. (I found the plug just to the rear of the oil filter in case anyone is going to do this on a 32 hp Kubota 4cyl) Someone here or on Orange Tractor Talk recommended having having the heater ready to go with the sealant on the threads so it was a quick swap. As soon as I pulled the hex head plug I put the heater right in, only lost about a cup or so of coolant, but it went into the clean bucket to reuse. I tightened it down as much as I felt comfortable with. The heater is brass so if anything was going to give it would be the threads on that rather than the engine block. Got it nice and snug and wiped off all the excess sealant that squeezed out. Installed the plug, zipped tied, replaced the coolant and it looks like I'm ready to go.

While we are on heaters, here is the model mentioned earlier in the thread that worked great on my pickup truck in a very cold climate. It's a KATZ 1500 watt lower radiator hose that had a heater hose connection to the block and this caused the coolant to circulate. This is the only one that worked for me and the truck was warm the minute I fired it up. I wouldn't use it on a tractor but for a truck it was great.

There is also a radiator hose heater only and without that heater hose circulation it really doesn't work very well in a cold climate. Here's a picture of that one that I found not as good as the first.

How long do you recommend keeping the block heater plugged in before starting the engine?

What I would do is plug it in for an hour and take some temperature readings, adjust the time based on your situation. How long I would plug in for might not be the best for you. There is no need to plug it in longer than necessary.

Thanks. Plugging in for an hour sounds good. What temperature should I watch for before starting the engine? I'm using one of the those infra-red thermometers.

I had a block heater on a Ford 2210 once that came with an owner's manual. It said to plug it in for 20 minutes, and that worked but I often left it on longer. I can't recall exactly but it was around an hour.

For my pickup truck with the lower hose recirculating pump, I left that plugged in all night. Everyone did and come start up time the heater worked and truck started like summer. Transmission must have warmed up too since it shifted great.

I think a little trial and error will be the way to go. If an hour gets the temp up to 60* or so then that is plenty but if only 32* then I would go longer. The ambient temp you're beginning at is also going it change it, is the tractor parked inside or outside? If it is really cold out it won't hurt it to stay plugged in a little longer.
