Generally filters are on the return side of the system not the suction side, like you would expect. Cavitation from restrictions on the suction side (plugged filter) will destroy a pump faster than a some contamination.

I havent traced out the plumbing fir the hydraulic & HST filters on my old L3200 or new L4060, but suspect they are on the return for that reason.
