Well I finally got around to working on the little tractor again and found out that fuel was not being delivered to the front fuel filter in any quantity. This was evidenced by the fact that fuel wouldn't flow out of the bleed screws when the key was turned to the on position or the tractor was cranked. However, the tractor would run for a short time when it would crank.

I am also having the problem that it won't turn over every time the key is turned on. Sometimes it just sits there. I'd suspect corrosion on the electricals, based on my experience with motorcycles and the things posted here about other tractors.

So I removed the rear wheel to get to the source of the failed fuel delivery and found that the first fuel filter was pretty much full of sediment. I know I need to replace that. I need an opinion on the fuel pump itself though. When the key is turned to "on", I hear a metallic "ponk" and then nothing else. Shouldn't the pump pressurize the line once the key is turned on? If it should, then it sounds likely that the fuel pump is bad, right? I mean, low voltage at the key wouldn't cause a fuel pump malfunction?

Hope this makes sense. I look forward to some input.

One thing at a time. Change the fuel filters first. If that doesn't help then go for the pump. Check power to the pump first before changing it. You may have low or no voltage to it do to bad wiring.

Makes sense. I'll take that advice. This little tractor looks like it hasn't gotten 5 minutes worth of care in the last 5 years. Dirt everywhere!

John, I have a brand new fuel pump in the box that I bought for my G1800. I'll try to do some checking with it and get back to you. One thing for sure, these pumps work off a solenoid that energizes/deenergizes and powers a small bladder. The pressure is probably down around 1-2 psi and the flow is tiny also. It flows at about the rate of a siphon. I'll let you know how my new one reacts.

Ah a solenoid is what i heard. I got the filter but wouldn't you know it it was raining cats and dogs all evening! Not that im complaining mind you. I'm sure we got more rain this evening than we've gotten all year so far. The system has slid a little south of me and Belton, temple, and Waco are getting hammered. Maybe it will redevelop. I hope so I need rain badly.

Well John, it rained and stormed all day here too (Woohoo!) and I didn't walk out to my container to check the fuel pump. I'll try to check it today.

EDIT: I held my hand on my pump while turning on the key. The pump made one low thunk sound and then I could feel it vibrating as the solenoid worked the bladder. It was a slight vibration, but very distinctive. Now, there's no way to know for sure if the bladder is damaged in your pump, but if it pumps fuel at all, I'd bet it is okay. A new pump is $100 and that's a lot for an experiment.

Thanks Jim! That is great news! It's very possible I missed the vibration you are talking about. I'm going to get that figured out tomorrow afternoon. What with all that's going on I feel a little like a rat in a cage sometimes. But short man wants to get this project finished so he can drive his tractor around.

Hey but I am going to get to use my b2910 tomorrow at the Waco wetlands for work which beats riding my office chair and crunching data. Woohoo!

I'm pretty sure the fuel pump is shot. It only makes a noise then nothing and no fuel is pumped. I cleaned all connections and also the pump components which appear fine but no joy. Still have the problem with no crank frequently. So it appears that the tractor needs the water pump repaired, a new fuel pump, and a new fan belt. The radiator also leaks it appears so I'll have to pull that to see what's up. Definitely worth fixing but I sure had hoped there wouldn't be so much wrong with it.

Hey, but the block isn't cracked:)

I'll post as I fix stuff in the hopes that it will help someone else. I'm a pay-as-you go guy so my repair speed is limited to how fast I have $
