I appreciate the info but if anyone knows a superior graple or if it doesn't matter which one please let me know. Thanks again for all the suggestions/comments.

Update...My dealer told me to take a hard look at the GL4240 before I purchase the GL3940 because of the loader increase and more HP with the same frame? Thoughts? Not worth the difference? Are the tractors essentially identical except for the HP upgrade? Does anyone know the FEL rating on this?

I have had my L3940HST and FEL for 2 years now, very happy with it, have not found anything it could not do performance wise. However, if I could do it agian, I also would look at the L4240HST. Specifications of each tractor and loader are in the Kubota Grand L brochure you got at your dealer. Philip.

My wife and I were going to buy a 3940 then changed our minds to get a 4240 based on the specs. A used L5030 popped up and I am glad we went even a bit bigger. It seems sometimes there is always a reason to go "just one more step". Yes, my next GL will be a 5740 since we already have an M.

LA854 LDR 2489 lbs. Kioti KL401 2761 lbs.
L4240 HST. weighs 3671lbs., DK40 weighs 3847 lbs.
How much more to move up?

I went with the 4240 not for the extra lifting ability of the 854 loader but the fact that it lifts higher. I wanted the extra height so I could reach over the sides of my old dump truck.

The simple fact is you can always spend more and get a larger this or that but sooner or later you just have to draw a line. Sure the extra lifting might come in useful but what do you plan on lifting? You can always take a smaller scoop, chances are you will have sooner or later anyways.

As far as the weight numbers go, I would take them as a rough guide. If you think you'll be picking up large logs then maybe you'll come across a situation that the 854 would lift it while the 724 may not. But like I said there's more of a chance that neither will lift it and you'll need to get out the chainsaw.

What I can tell you is you will love the Kubota HST transmission. Once you get a little seat time you're not going to want to give it up. If I had to make the choice between moving a pile of dirt in 10 bucket loads and a regular HST transmission or 11 with the HST+ it wouldn't even be close, Kubota all the way, it's just that much better. It's just a matter of time before the other brands catch up.

Since the L3940 and the L4240 are the same frame size I would certainly go with the L4240. More hp and more loader. Hard to go wrong with that.

When I purchased my L4240:it was between it and the L3940,the dealer pointed out the loader difference and that the L4240 had a larger more robust front end.Really like mine...they are a lot tracor for the money.A friend has a L3940 that he turbo-charged...nice.

Both tractors are very nice. But it sounds like you are a bit tight on money. Why not get the Kioti and with the $2500 that you would be saving on the tractor you could get a a grapple and another implement right away, or more remotes front and rear. While many guys get by with using their rear remote for their grapple, you will find that most people would prefer to have the grapple control on the loader joystick.

Sounds like you will be using your PTO quite a bit. Double check how they engage. I know for me, how the PTO engages could be a deal breaker, no matter how good the rest of the tractor is. Just be sure that you consider everything before you sign on the bottom line.

Just my :2cents: and good luck. ;)

The cost of buying, and the cost of ownership are sometimes very different. For my smaller property, I like the idea of the Kioti CK30, etc. in size, and weight for woods work, but they are a little more "tender" underneath than some other tractors that I have run. I liked the Mahindra too, and there are a couple of local dealers. The thing I ran into when I was shopping was around here the price was very close between red, orange, and orange, with the Deere stuff a bit higher. I was just too afraid that if I, or my sons had to, or wanted to sell the tractor that the Kubota orange would retain a higher precentage of it's purchase price, and sell much quicker. The last couple of Kubotas that I have sold went in a week, or so. Are they all good tractors? You bet they are! Do I wish I had bought one of the others? Well, when I bought mine I thought I might finish mow with it so I chose a lighter tractor for that. As it turned out, I have spent a lot more time in the woods with mine, trail building, etc., and could use some extra weight sometimes, but I probably would stay with Kubota......... though the 3pt hitch would have to work well. The Kubota tractors seem more nimble in use, and that is borne out by the specs, and that is very important to me. The huge rocks, and old trees I don't want to damage just won't move for me!
