Kubota M59 and Trailer, Weight ?

All I can say is I've read dozens of these "what are the CDL requirements" threads over the years here and I don't think I've seen this issue settled yet, so here we go again. :confused2: Right now, none of this applies to me, but someday it might, and it makes my head hurt trying to figure it out. To the OP, good luck getting this sorted out.

Whether or not you need a CDL depends on the GVWR of your F350. You are allowed up to 26k combined without a CDL. 26k - your 14k trailer leaves you 12k for your truck. If your truck is 12 GVWR or less you are good to go without CDL. If your truck is over 12 GVWR you will need a CDL.

Hey Duffster, you're an Expert Right!

This is not true. Except in CA.

and Connecticut. Here, the state police read trailer over 10,000 lbs needs CDL. what they forget to read is, combined truck. trailer, load not to exceed 26K.. And then the fight started,,,,,,,,,,

Everything is relative. :)

It's unfortunate that the cops are illiterate and the people are spineless.

To the op check with your states DOT. Thats the only way you will get the right answer.

Duffster nice to see you still spreading lies. Every time one of these threads start you are the expert. And everyone else is wrong as always.

AND Maine!

You really need to study up on your regs.

This is right out of your states book.

Can anyone tell me what issues am I going to run into if I'm wanting to trailer it around to do odd and end jobs. Tractor is 8345 lbs, and my trailer I don't know but its 7x22 tandem 14k.

I'd guess the trailer is in the 3000-4000 range.

My M59 is currently on a 20' trailer, but I find that too short to properly balance things. Also 8.5k of tractor + 3.5k trailer weight on a hitch at the rear of the vehicle is not the most comfortable towing setup.

I am currently seeking a 24+4 as a replacement, and gooseneck hitch.

The chart Duffster posted is the national standard for CDL requirements. And most states use the same chart. The short read is if you are under 26k GROSS and not hauling for profit then no CDL is needed. I understand some states may have more stringent rules, but at the national level 26k is the dividing line.

Most new production F350's have either a 10k or 11.4k GVWR. Subtract that from 26k and thats the largest trailer GVWR you can pull. 14k should be fine, but do your home work and a little math to be sure.

Also once you start using that M59, you might find like most of us have, that you want some more weight for traction. Filled tires will add another 1000lbs, or more. Also you'll likely want to take more than one implement to a job. So factor that into selecting a trailer as well.
