Wow. My dad had a 3/4 ton Dodge. Pulled a 14 foot gooseneck grain box. Usually weighed in about 27,000 total with 300 bushels of corn or wheat. Heaviest load ever was 29,960 lbs. We never had any special license... Course that was 28 years ago at the latest. Laws may have changed.

My point is, No one can tow a trailer with A GVWR over 10,000 lbs. without a CDL Class-A. I do have a CDL Class-A, and have a little knowledge of how to interpret the law here in Maine (see my bio).

A 8000lb GVWR pickup with a 14,000lb GVWR trailer is a class C configuration

Without specific endorsements, tank, haz-mat, etc.. this is a non-CDL required configuration.

You are 100% correct. Don't waste your time you can't win. This has been going on forever on this site and it's the same guys even on other forums they are always right.

To the original poster contact your DOT in your state for the correct and final answer.

Good luck.

Thank you, I guess I got caught in their web:) And YES to the OP. Contact your State Police and ask for the CDL division. They are the ONLY ones that can advise you.

Your welcome. I have done the same thing and it's like talking to the wall arguing on the web it does no one no good.

But the fools that live for it. Most of them don't even have a trailer or tractor but still know it all.

Oh and by the way just do a search on this site or google and see we're Duffster has been right every time. Even when proven wrong.

When do I need a Alabama CDL instead of my regular Alabama Drivers License?

A Alabama CDL is required if you operate any of the following CMV's . . .

1. A vehicle with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 lbs.
2. A vehicle towing a unit with a manufacturer's GVWR of more than 10,000 lbs. when the GCWR exceeds 26,000 lbs.
3. A vehicle used to . . .(a.) carry 15 or more passengers (excluding the driver), or (b.) carry (15) or less people (including the driver) when carrying children to or from school and home regularly for compensation.
4. A vehicle carrying hazardous materials in amounts requiring placarding

Hope this helps
