I would not buy that particular Deere (4720). It is one of their "value" models made in Pune, India. That would be a deal breaker for me.

No, that's quite incorrect. The 4x20 series is all made in the US -assembled in Georgia - and is about as US-made as any CUT can be (which is not 100%). Also, the 4x20 series are not value models, either in marketing or in pricing.

The 5103-5403 models are made in India, and would be viewed as "value" models by many. (The 5603, despite the name, is not made in India.) While I prefer US made, I have not heard any reports of problems with the India-made Deeres.

To be totally honest, the "Power-Tech" engines are made in Mexico and the rear ends are done in Japan. All they do here is put the stuff together. Thats what all tractor companies do. Deere's product is no more american than just about anyone else. I would not fault them for it though, its a global marketplace. The Indian value models are in the 5000 series and are very basic tractors, you can tell them come from India.

Do watch, on their 0/36 program your paying the cost of financing. Once you hit that 36mo term they pull a series of discounts from the dealer raising the cost of the tractor. CNH is doing that to us on some models now too. Kubota is not, what you see is what you get.

Deere (and CAT) is more American than Kubota, Mahindra and all the overseas companies in that the profits go to an American headquartered company.

Deere does biz around the world because they're huge and they need to utilize foreign plants for manufacturing just like any other global company.

Oh no, an engine from Mexico! A part from Japan! Probably still more US content than my Dodge Ram. Like I said in my first post, none of the CUTs are 100% US made. NH is similar to JD CUTs in having a variety of parts, finally bolted together here. Kioti has mostly Korean parts, bolted together here. As I understand it Kubota is mostly Japanese parts, which are partially bolted together in Japan, and the rest bolted together at a dealer.

Anyway, not sure what you're implying by "you can tell them come from India." I don't own a 5103, but the ones I've looked at are well made; to my eye I see little difference in their assembly or parts vs. other brands, or other JD models. Only problem I've heard of with them is that on some, the yellow wheels will fade to pale yellow fairly quickly. It's a minor problem, and as I understand it is covered by the warranty.

What Neil was pointing out is the John Deere markets the tractor as made in the US when it isn't made in the US any more then the other compact tractors. A lot of buyers see the Made in US tag on Deeres site and believe the entire tractor is built here.

But lets not detract from what the OP is asking and try to keep this thread on topic.

That totally overlooks the fact that its still a global market place. These companies have subsidies in the countries they are operating in. KMA, KIE, I am sure Deere has "John Deere of Mexico" and other subsidies that operate in and pay taxes to those countries as well. I think the company that does more for this country is the one that makes their capital invesments here. Deere just built an engine factory in Mexico and moving more production to India. Kubota just built their 4th production facility in Georgia and cranked up another RTV production line that builds the machines for export to Europe. I not suggesting that we put Kubota on some pedastool, however the image of Deere (or CAT) as some all american brand is simply false. The marketplace has moved so far beyond that now I can't see how the country where ones headquaters is could honestly be used as a measure of any company.

None the less, this should really be a seperate thead and has nothing to do with what the guy is looking at.

Unfortunately in this day and age, there are very few items that are truly made in the US. Cars are a good example of that. Take a look at the window sticker between the Detroit 3 vs. Toyota or Honda...Even on the Detroit 3, a lot of the car parts are from overseas.

I have an appointment to check out the 5740 on Saturday but I'm still trying to find someplace relatively local to me that has a JD 4720 to try out. In checking out the JD threads, the main complaint people have with the JD 4720 is that it's pretty loud. To me that isn't too big of an issue to me as I always wear ear protection around the tractor or lawn mower.

I stand corrected. I don't know where I pulled the 4720 number. I looked up the 5403 and it is as you (and I - almost) said made in India. I personally would not buy ANY tractor made in India regardless of make. I am not trying to insult any make. This is one of my personal preferences. I would not buy a tractor made in China, or Turkey, or Yugoslavia, or the Czech Republic, or Mexico for that matter. It may come to pass some day that I don't get that choice, but that day is no here yet....

I would almost gaurantee you that almost all 20-100HP tractors built today have parts, if not major components, from those countries and very little from the USA.

The M9540 we have now is made in Japan. Most parts (other than those made by Kubota are "Denso" brand - made in Japan) are also. I have never seen any that are from countries I mentioned before. To each his own.
