Just had a news bulletin on the radio here in Oakland California... I'm thinking what in the world as the report said 9 killed and 18 injured in a gang fight.

Oakland is always rated as one of the most dangerous cities in America and I'm thinking here we go again...

Then the reported says reporting live from Waco Texas???

Its nowhere near too late. I would elaborate but have learned to just keep quiet on these topics online.

I hear ya. You might need a western border.

The unions strangle west coast traditional manufacturing. Doesn't impact software, etc. but it is too bad some of the heavy manufacturing is getting forced out.

Yeah. I think that trend is dying out, since the dollar has got stronger, it is becoming more expensive to source things here.

I'm retired, but I have seen ads here for machining jobs, and the rates are pretty low. A lot of automotive suppliers here are double vested - they have virtually identical facilities in Mexico or elsewhere. As a neighbor, and manager at a local supplier told me " Minimum wage or Mexico" is what the thinking is. If local wages get too high, or labor gets scarce, they move work out. Globalization sucks for factory folks.

One other thing I found out about local plants - the HR folks make sure the new hires are signed up for all the available welfare programs they can qualify for. The reasoning is, that if they have that government support, they are less likely to quit and go somewhere else.

New England has been going out of business for almost 400 years. We're still here. Yall will figure it out.

According to BLS, the mean hourly wage for a machinist in the US is $19.97. In Michigan it's $19.32. In "Metro" MI it's $20.32 and in "non-metro" MI it's $17.22. Don't know if you consider that high or low but MI isn't a lot different from most other places.

The way it came across the radio I thought it was local...

Oakland is no stranger to gangs... Hells Angels, Earth First, Symbionese Liberation, Weather Underground, Black Panthers... etc...

Sonny Barger would come into the store where I worked in High School and the FBI was at the grade school with the Weather Underground...

Here in Tyler and most of East TX, if somebody robs a gas station, it's top of the news for days. Doesn't matter if it's local or 50 miles away, it's a big deal. When there is a murder, that's a full weeks worth of news! I think we had 4 murders here last year and there was about a dozen or so in the 50 mile radius. Back in the Bay Area, they only reported the a couple of them every day because there where so many that most where never mentioned. Funny how quickly they catch those gas station robbers and murders here, which also takes on another week worth of news, but there, most never get solved.

I bet every cop in Waco was out working overtime to get this taken care of. I bet they where all pissed off it happened there and they took it personally to stop it from happening again. I also bet that if they didn't get everybody, they will!!!

A few years back, a MC show I used to watch had a segment on a small group of riders (friends, not gang types) in Oakland. Most of them did serve, or were serving in the US Army.

I got the impression they weren't joking when they said "they feared for their lives less when they were on patrol over in the sandbox, than when they were on Oakland's streets".

Bad "stuff" can happen anywhere, but Oakland has quite the rep, even outside of the USA.

Yes it does... when I have visitors come from Germany... they are excited they actually get to experience Oakland first hand... I've had to take a couple to the Hells Angels clubhouse where the guys were as nice as they could be to a fellow biker... not me... the guests from Germany...

All and all the guest from Europe did not see what they were expecting... which was a cross between Somalia and the warlords of Columbia....

I had some medical items for donation the other day... 8 Stryker Hospital Gurney's I was donating to a non-profit... the organization was not sure about picking them up... I'm in Oakland and get that a lot.... anyway... the guys kept saying they couldn't believe they were in Oakland... often the reality does not live up to the hype.

Everytime I put something for sale on Craigslist with pictures and a fair price... I get almost 99% no shows... when I call back I learn they were told it was too dangerous to respond... when I put the same item up for sale and use either of my brother's addresses about 10 minutes away... the car, appliance or whatever sells immediately... only difference is the location for pick up...
