Just today I was taking to a fellow who was running a direct (slip) clutch on the output shaft (PTO) of tractor.... IT was tucked up under rear so it would "protect" anything connected to PTO shaft....

Could be something like found here..

Bare Co USA - Heavy Duty Safety Clutches

That might be part of concept to protect hardware and people from injury if something goes askew...

Another option if tractor hydraulics are no practical andyou want hydraulic operation of winch may be to use PTO hydraulic pump...

Ok, so I started ordering gear to get the build on the way. So the next thing is a pto shaft. I have never had a pto implement and it is a costly purchase for shipping, so I would like it to be the right one. I have 19 hp at pto.

I am thinking of buying a pto shaft with a slip clutch. As the cost of it is not that much more. But unsure if it can be adjusted to loose enough to slip before something would break? I imagine it could be.

Also I assume that a extendable shaft can be cut to a shorter length.

Also do I need a slip clutch or would a shear bolt be good enough. I think the slip clutch would give be better peace of mine on safety.

Here is the shaft I was looking at. Also I have 1 shaft to attach at the implement end so im going to need a Bushing to 1 3/8? Can it be cut?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Nathan.

A drive line slip clutch is the wrong kind of clutch for a winch...

You NEED to do a LOT more research BEFORE you start ordering parts!

I have no intentions on it being a clutch to control the winch. It’s only there in case it hooks a stump or rock, to protect from shock load or a sudden stop. That’s what I thought a driveline clutch was for.

The winch itself has a dog clutch.

The weakest link should take the abuse? Which will be the tractor, which should be protected by the slip clutch.

There are a lot of good reasons why a 3pt mounted logging winch is built like they are.
Heed Sawyer Rob's wisdom!

The clutch is used a lot to coax the load into first moving, and then controlling the load as it's drawn up. There is just no better option except maybe to have a pair of spools ;-)

If you use a hydraulic drive system, the slow wind speed works to your advantage. With a two way center neutral valve (log splitter) right handy to the operator, You can control the wind in in real time. That is, the operator will be able to tell when it's time to halt winding or even spool back out. When the tractor starts groaning or rearing, The load needs adjusting. A hydro system could also used the over pressure relief valve that is built into the dedicated control valve to set the max pulling force. Of course in a power beyond configuration, setting the winch pressure low would set the entire system low. Not good for bucket or even the 3 point.

Simply, A logging winch needs instant operator control of power to the wind in spool. The cam actuated large disc clutches are an ideal solution. A dog clutch can work if it can be cammed out under load and then have the load held or released as the need requires.

If buying the pto shaft is a hurdle for you, I suggest you do more considering of just what you want to do with your winch and what the winch needs to do for you. We don't want anyone to get hurt because the control of machinery that is required just isn't there.
It's not as though logging is like pulling a disabled car up on to a flatbed.

eta

Think about it, your winch has a 21:1 power ratio. What sort of "over load" could ever make it back to the tractor pto? Don't undersize your pulling cable or you'll have a deadly snake when it snaps.

Ok after some thinking and considering the thoughts of people here on the forum and on another forestry forum, i think i'm going to go with hydraulic. I know my tractor will be slow with the hydraulic motor. But the safety aspect, keeps me thinking. Everyone seems to think that 8000lb is enough for my tractor and after using my 3500lb electric to haul some wood this past week, i think 8000lb is more than enough. I am in the woods by myself so safety of me and the equipment is number one. Only using this for my own use and not trying to make any money using it.

So after running some number from a site i found about hydraulic motors on a motor i found available to me. I think i may be able to run around 6400lb at 33ft/min. Which if those number are somewhat correct, im find with that. Could someone with a little more hydraulic knowledge correct me if im wrong. Ill post the motor and website used for calculations below. The winch has a 4.8 in drum and 21:1 worm drive gear down.

Hydraulic Motor Calculations - Womack Machine Supply Company

Okay, i dont know a big lot about hydraulics so, i could be very wrong with all of this. My tractors hydraulics are 5.15gpm @ 2205psi. So the motor above is only rated for 2030psi. So is this motor unuseable?
If so would this one work: 6.2 cu. in. 2-Bolt Hydraulic Spool Valve Geroler Motor | Princess Auto

Another question about hydraulics, if i did want to get more flow from my tractor could i run a hydraulic pump from a engine accessory belt and plumb into the current hydraulic system for increased flow?

Sorry for the long post, maybe none of this make any sense. Thanks, Nathan.

Well I have a KISS winch, it is a 12 VDC like U see on bigger 4 X 4's for when they get stuck in the mud.
I made a rear mount and it is wired to my battery with nice big cables.
For control it uses a standard extension cord so I can walk along with my logs and start stop at will.
If I don't push it my tractor alternator keeps the battery topped up.
About pushing it, as I am close to 80 I don't push much anymore, works 4 me!
Last time I 'logged' I pulled 4 X 12 ft cedar logs w/o any problem.
It also handles long maple logs equally well.
I use the cedar to make split rail fencing and the maple likes to burn in my fireplace.
Life is good,(but at a slower pace than B4)

PILOON's info has merit if you aren't doing it all day every day, you haven't said how much use it will get. Electric 12000lb winches start cheap, if they are suitable, it may be another way to get to the same end point, couple of secondhand truck batteries on the 3pt frame?

Regarding the referenced "device". I find it most amusing that in the first "check point" of the description of features there is the phrase "when the winch works"..... :)
Gotta wonder about a $240 piece of equipment that may be called on to do the job of a $2400 unit.
