I was not happy to read this thread as I bought a new L3400 last year (2006 model).

I have a manual transmission. Am I correct in assuming that this problem affects both manual and hst models?

Rest easy, This problem is with HST models.

Can we be a bit more specific? From what I've gathered from watching this thread for a couple weeks now; the problem seems to be limited to early generation tractors. After a certain serial number, someone earlier in the thread quoted 54000 if memory serves, the design was changed. My tractor SN is in the 74000 range. I'm not worried about my PTO.

Can someone verify this before this thread once again crucifies every L series tractor?

Verify what?

Here is the thread summary:

The over running clutches with problems was installed prior to serial number 57745 in the L2800 and L3400 HST tractors only. Kuboto has no real fix for the earlier models.

The PTO design after 57745 seems to be improved with no reported problems.

I discussed the ratcheting noise with my dealer back in May of last year. He faxed me a copy of service bulletin PSB-2005-052-A, which is dated Dec. 19, 2005. This is Rev. A of the service bulletin everyone talks about, but I have not heard anyone talking about this one and a search did not turn up anything. Sorry, the picture is terrible because it is a fax. It seems to get rid of the oil fix and change the cams to a type that do not overrun. My service guy talked me out of the fix, he said the style Kubota used has been used for years on Ford tractors. All of this talk is making me wish I had done it now.

Anyone else ever hear of this fix?

I called my dealer and the michigan kubota service rep, and brought up the service bull. you posted.. I have a earlier serial number and it was prior to the noted clean point in your TSB so I told my dealer I was not having an issues but was un satisifed with the ratchet sound when I clutched. The dealer picked it up and installed a "later" tsb repair parts.. I will try to get the number and post it. I came home today and it was in the driveway.. back from the dealer, so I jumped on and it no longer has the ratchet sound.. I hogged about an acre and had no issues.. I have done about 30hrs of hogging on the original cams, without issue, I just hated the ratchet sound..
Thanks for the info!

Please , if you can post the part numbers of the cams that were installed in your tractor. According to the service bulletin they should be part #TC220-99990. These are susposed to be new style solid type cams that will take care of the ratcheting sound, as it has in your tractor. These new cams were susposed to have been installed after the original cams failed. My tractor still made the ratchet sound. After these cams failed , the new style cams were susposed to have been installed again for the second time. My tractor still makes the ratchet sound if I push my clutch in with PTO engaged, or if I throttle the engine down with PTO engaged. Somethings not right here and I'm wondering if they have really installed the new style cams. I would think that if it took care of the ratcheting noise in your tractor it should do the same for mine. When I requested a copy of the work order for the last time it was "fixed" there were no parts or numbers listed on the order. It says replaced PTO cams and spring do to failure. The cams that came out the second time, I posted a picture of, I think it was about the third post on this thread. I wonder if these are indeed the new solid type cams, or if my dealer even knows what he's talking about.

I would like to talk to your dealer and see exactly he did to your tractor to to cure the ratchet noise. I'm thinking he did what the service bulletin said and installed the new cams and mine didn't and used the old style cams not only once, but twice because my tractor still ratchets.

Any info you can provide on this subject will be appreciated

This fix, PSB-2005-052-A, raises the oil level to stop the noise.
I have attached it as a PDF.

No, that is PSB-2005-052. PSB-2005-052-A (note the -A) supercedes it. The -A version replaces the cams with a new part number. What I can't tell is if the new part is substantially different than the old one, or just the same design with steeper ramps.

It someone could post a clearer copy of the -A version, we might be able to see the difference......

I have an L2800 that makes the ratchetting noise. I've been following threads about this for quite awhile, including the various ways people disengage the PTO clutch to eliminate hearing the noise. I think most people are aware, but not everyone, that the ratchetting noise is not harmful (just annoying). My concern is the weak or faulty cams. Sometimes that issue seems to get intermingled with the ratchetting noise. I know Kubota has fix for the noise, which just quiets it, I wish they would provide a fix for the cams.
