Im with wolfy, I just happen to love gears and clutches, but on the flip side, I am pretty well known for being able to break anything! I have been treating my new L4400 like a baby tho! Hope that feeling lasts, first bran new tractor and feels great for a change to have everything working like it should! Using a tractor shouldnt be like playing the drums. LOL!

Geared v HST, where have I heard that; seems somehow familiar.

I used geared tractors exclusively until a few years ago, but the older I get the better I like HST. We just moved our MF 375 out to another farm because I just can't stand to operate the clutch more than a few times.

I still operate a geared unit, but it is Hydraulic Shuttle Shift.

The guys who farm our land use 7000 and 8000 Series John Deeres, but they were down working on the barn and pond levy and I stopped to talk to them and they were using a 4610 eHydro and they love it.

I guess it is OK to like one or the other or both.

I'm going to be mowing more than loader work. I just want to find a gear I like and push the throttle up and mow. Plus I hear if you ever do have hydro mechanical problems you better be ready to reach deep in those overalls to fix it.

I'm with you there pipefitter. My backyard is a big hill, that I mow it with a old Japanese Ford. I start off in 2nd M, and leave it there. I don't have to shift it at all.

I mow with a L5030 HST and 6' cutter and put it in L or M depending on conditions and engage the cruise control. I mow a lot with a M8540 with a 10' cutter and put it in L2 or L3 depending on conditions and go; both work the same, steady speed and no gear/range changes unless conditions change.

I don't know about the cost as I have never blown an HST or known anyone who has; never broke a geared unit either.
