I think you guy's are blowing this turbo thing out of proportion. I've had turbo's on a lot of different diesels over the years. Having a turbo on a diesel is a positive not negative. It makes a diesel more efficient and it give a much better torque curve. Diesels aren't all about HP it's more about low end usable torque.

Worried about idling it at shut down? You only have to idle it for an extended period (5 min.) if it's been working at high load, the EGT's are high and there isn't a running at reduced load period before shut down (like driving back to the barn or garage). Under normal conditions, just let it idle for about 30 seconds to let the turbo spool down and turn the key off. It's not that big of a deal and there is a lot to be gained for the little inconvenience.

I vote for the MX5100.

If you're still scared of the turbo then I vote for the MX4700...

My non-turbo'd L3940 has all the power I need, & I never have to think about a turbo: cooling it down or how expensive it's gonna be to replace it some day (hopefully later rather than sooner).

I prefer the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stup** ... I mean Sunshine) whenever possible

I understand, different strokes for different folks, just giving my 2 cents.

There was an interesting thread on this a few months ago and if I remember correctly, I was on the non-turbo side. Since owning our M8540 for a few months I see concerns for longevity as a non issue for me. There is also a really old IH 1486 in our barn with a Tubo that has been very reliable over the years according to the owner.

My normal with any engine is the lst part of running the engine while parking is at near idle with no load. It might normally take up to about five minutes by the time I might be working the tractor to the time it is parked and shut off and I've not seen anything that has resulted in a failure.

I have a MX 4700 DT and it is awesome, I grade most of the time and it will pull dirt over the back of a 6' box and start off with it full from a dead stop, plenty of power!

With my MX5100HST when I get done running at or near 540 PTO RPMs I throttle down to 1000 or so and do a little clean up with the fel if I am snowplowing Then idle over to the barn and get it parked, drop the bucket and 3pt hitch, go around and wipe things down a bit and get it cleaned up, tucked it while it idles nicely then shut it down. this "wind down last 10 or 15 minutes and is time well spent. my 2c

its been my experience that turbocharged diesels get better economy than NA engines of similar power..

If I had the choice of 2 identical tractors one with a turbo and one without I would take the turbo charged engine hands down. It does fit the KISS rule.

The 5100 use quite a bit more fuel than the 4700 or the 4400. In most cases a turboed motor should be more efficient. Not the case with the 5100. I even got the dealer to admit there sum what of a fuel hog compared to the 4700.
