Land Pride Rotary Cutter Paint Peeling and Rust

/ Land Pride Rotary Cutter Paint Peeling and Rust #21
I have several Land Pride implements including the same 6 foot rotary cutter and can't say that I ever inspected the paint on it when I bought it brand new. I've touched up the paint a few times, welded on it quite a few times, and done more damage to it then it was ever intended to receive. I'm on my third drive shaft for it and couldn't even count how many sheer pins I've busted on it. Dozens for sure. While I agree that the dealer should take care of the paint blemishes that bother you, it's also something that with use, is going to seem pretty minor.

I've stuck to mostly used implements, but I've looked at a lot of new ones on dealer's lots, and they pretty much all have some sort of paint chips, scratches, etc. It's pretty much all from transport, loading, and unloading. The spots on your cutter are pretty minor, and the number doesn't seem to be excessive.

Rotary cutters take one heck of a beating, and there's really no way to keep them looking new. Heck, I've seen rocks get thrown out the side bounce off a tree and come back to hit the mower hard enough to cause a dent, much less a paint chip.

So minor that he had to point them out.

And furthermore the OP bought it in December in Minnesota and just took delivery of it.
If one is picky about rust one should try to prevent it. The OP mentions the cutter sat outside over the winter, maybe he should have gotten it inside.

TBN has seen many complaints about stuff weathering at the dealers, it's a "fact of life". Perhaps there are dealers with acres of indoor storage in a climate controlled environment but I have not seen them and I would expect their prices to be higher. All dealers I've gone to visit have "new" equipment sitting outside with slight weathering.

If I wanted something in "pristine" condition I would expect to pay a little more and move it to my environmentally controlled area so I could keep it in "pristine" condition. I've gotten in the habit of walking around my "stuff" with a spray can of Fluid film just so I can spray stuff (bought a case for about $7/can on ebay). I dislike rust. I dislike growing old. But what's the alternative?

And I trust in dealers and mother nature. They have to store implements outside to have good prices and mother nature has to put iron and oxygen together in the presence of moisture.

All of my 3pt equipment gets used and is subjected to getting scratched by rocks, dirt and branches. I don't know how much it would cost to ensure the metal never became exposed but I'm sure it would be a lot. And I sand and scrape stuff and repaint occasionally. I think a paint coating that would ensure my plow never rusted would be very expensive.

Perhaps TBN needs a FAQ that includes things like - "when you buy something check it over BEFORE you buy it", "rust happens", "if you don't like the mud keep off the ground"

Land plows and harrows get a bit rusty, but with the occasional proper usage they get nice and shiny :cool2:

I find that implement mfr's do not do a good job on prep before painting
or many just paint it without using primer. EA tho, I was there year ago
January and I watched the cleanup and prepping of some equipment
and it took him about a half hour of spraying soapy water, and clean
water several times before it went in for painting. I think they had a
chemical they were spraying on also....

I have bought a couple of implements from dealers that were new but nasty looking. I bought a blade that had been at the dealer so long that the park stand had sank into the ground 2''. I am going trying to get all of my implements looking good. The stuff that I have that looks good I try to keep it looking good. I try to keep it clean and touch the paint once in a while.

New tractors cost 20 K at least. And they have great paint on them at least Kioti and Kubota do, just like any new car made today. The 20% rule still applies to cost of painting. I am not willing to pay and most other people a extra 20% on implements to get a factory type paint job. The numbers just don't add up.

I am really picky about things. I made a pretty nice three point trailer hitch for my new kubota, primed it (sanded to 400 grit) and matched the paint. After 3 weeks it was covered with scratches and rust. I have accepted thats what happens to tractor stuff. If I was transporting that new cutter it would not get scratched. But like they said those things get stacked and bumped around. It would bug me too.....until I grabbed a beer.
