Mowing Large Mower Maintenance

On my 422 48" finish mower, the bearings are sealed on the ends, but not on the inside (the top of the bottom, and the bottom of the top) according to Keith.

Seems Power Trac "has a better idea".

I have a question about the 60" finish mower, nothing to do with bearings though. I bought a used finish mower from trac doc ,it is in real good shape, but my question is, the bolt that holds the back wheels on has the head of the bolt then 2 washers then the wheel and then 2 more washers and then a nut that tightens I presume against the frame of the mower , and then a nut on the underside of the mower and possibly a washer there, is that how yours are assembled? Does it have an axel that has an offset that is larger than the threads that is on the bolt like a regular push mower has? The reason that I am asking is I would like to know before I take it apart how it is made if anyone knows, because the head of the bolt sticks out too far and when you get close to the chain link fence the bolt head can catch on the fence and deform it. I would like to get the head of that bolt in farther if possible, and if not then come up with another solution. I can see the side of the deck that is rounded but there is a blind spot with the legs of the rops and my cab that I would have to stretch in order to see the wheel and I don't like that. If the rear wheel set in a little farther I believe you could mow the fence row without having to use a weed eater on it. Probably just wishful thinking.

Yes, that is the way my 60" mower rear wheels are set up and yes, I also catch fences with the bolt head. If it was inboard only .5" it would not catch.

So I am not the only one that sees this problem. Have you had the bolt out, is it a regular bolt or is it a bolt that steps down where it goes through the deck? I will eventually take it out to see but if someone else has already taken one of them out then I will know ahead of time what I need to do.

Mine are just plain 1/2 inch grade 5 bolts.

I bought 10 bolts as I have broken many when hittiing an object. Replaced two this summer already.

I think it is just a bolt with no threads where the wheel rides on it as an axle. As I recall, you need two open ended wrenches to remove the bolt or put it back on. They use a couple nuts to lock it in place by jamming them, I think. I think I may have broken one off my first year and just picked up a replacement at the hardware store. Nothing special. :)

I ran the bolt from the outside to the inside to limit the amount of overhang.

My bolt head is on the outside, too. It still sticks out about a half an inch past the edge of the deck. Just enough to catch the wire on the fence. :)

Could you grind the head round so that wire would roll off? I don't think you actually need to put a wrench on it.
