Largest Garden Tractor?

Just out of curiosity, what is the largest garden tractor? The Deere 400 series? Simplicity 9020? The subject came up at lunch today and I figured I would get other people's input.

Cadet 982 or super series chassis is as big a model as you mentioned but then there was the 185 cub lowboy or was that the first compact?

I saw a 4 cylinder water cooled wheel horse a few years back with a 60 inch mower deck if I remember correctly

It does kinda bring up the question of where is the line between a garden tractor and a subcompact.

Did it look like it was original or a converson somebody did?

They did build some back in the seventies I believe with four cylinder gas engine. Good units we still have a couple around.

The garden tractor is derived from the sit-on lawn mowers of the 50s-60s suburbia. A machine built around a mower deck as its central core. Just build them a little bigger and now they can blow snow and till the "garden
Compacts are derived from larger farm tractors whos main purpose was ground engagement. Build them a little smaller and now they can be used for a multitude of applications where a farm tractor doesnt fit.
I think a good rule of thumb is cat.0 vs cat.1 capability.

I don't see there is much gained from trying to differentiate where the lawn mower / garden tractor / compact utility tractor separation/overlap might be.... seems there was such a round table discussion a few times before that doesn't produce much useful information.

To some a lawn is a garden, but a garden isn't a lawn. :confused3:

To go back to the original question, what would be the biggest? Tractor data doesnt list the measurements for alot of them.

At one time, you had international harvester cramming a small diesel in their 982 series of garden tractors, John Deere was putting I think a three cylinder yanmar in one of theirs, Case had the 446 model---if you put them all side by size, they are roughly cousins in terms of wheel base, tire size, etc.

Some have the opinion that the John Deere diesel garden tractor was the ultimate garden tractor that kind of grew out of these competing product lines. I forget the model number, but there are websites that specifically focus on the John Deere as the most developed extension of the garden tractor.

Then there is the Kutoba 6100/7200/etc series of diesel tractors.

To me, they are all garden tractors on steroids--not compact utility tractors, but others may have differing opinions and are welcome to say so. Once you get close to Ford 8n or the Cub Lo-Boy or the Hefty G in size, to me that's a compact utility tractor because of the weight and wheel size and not necessarily based on HP, but really the physical size of the tractor.

Others may see this differently.

A John Deere 455 is the biggest I have seen. I had a diesel engine and weighed almost 1000lb.

The John Deere 430 diesel weighed 1170 lbs and I believe it to be the heaviest of the JD garden tractors.

A Gravely 16-G with a 16 HP motor and a mowing deck weighs 1,300#. They are tanks.

I don't think it matters much but my X749 weighs 1462 lbs with the mower deck. Add a little more for the 3pt hitch and 540 pto kit, around 1500 lbs.

My benchmark for a tractor is it has to be able to outpull my grandpa's mule.:laughing:

i would have to say either the power king or the case 440 series. both are bullet proof designs and work realy well
