Good grief... reading these posts; with the various "bureaucratic idiosyncrasies" in the different states makes me wonder how in the world anyone can take care of the daily business of living!!

AKfish

Good question, Md.'s DMV is not any exception. My trailers are tagged in Maine. Wish I could do the same with my car and trucks.

Like the other SC guy i too live in the free state. We do not register or tag any trailers. I have 3 trailers now i use to have 4 but sold the small jon boat and trailer. I have a 16 ft car hauler no tag, i did not even get the certificate of origin or title thing when i bought it cause we dont tag trailers and if i did that would mean to get a new one i would have to tag it and then pay taxes on it every year. When we sell one you just get your money write a bill a sale up so no one says its stolen and you both go your ways. Now you can put a tag on your trailer, but you pay taxes on it and pay for the tag. :confused2: Camper trailers seem to have to be tagged once they hit a certain size or weight but not familiar with that as i have not looked into it nor do i have one. Anyway the other 2 trailers are boat trailors and i do not have tags or titles or origin letters or anything on them. Boat and motor yes but not trailer. This is diff from some states which do not require motor titles or seperate motor registration from the boat.

Never heard of the AAA thing not sure if they do that in this state or not?

Yep you got it. I have a 16 ft dovetail carehauler. I bought it new about 6 months ago (lone Wolf Tralers out of Al.). I bought it from one of their dealers i did not drive to AL. Anyway i do not need a tag on my own personal trailer to use to haul tracotrs cars scrap or anything, but i could tag it for some reason if i wanted to, maybe easier to track if stolen?? I got no idea why anyone would tag it as you have annual property tax like on a boat or house and then you have a semmi-annual tag fee (not really sure how often the tag fee is on trailers, i dont tag them, but our vehicles are every 2 years, actually i think they say permanent on them so maybe its a one time fee, but i know you pay annual taxes it you title it with DMV). I have a friend who runs a landscape business and trys to do everything leagal. She pays taxes on employees the hispanic she hires supposedly have SSn's and she sends payroll deductions on them. She runs new stuff as far as mowers etc. Her 2 16 ft landscape trailers dont have tags and i know she has got stopped by DOT but i dont think they were no tag violations ( i was thinking maybe business requires it) just mybe load secured or overweight, didnt really ask why they were stopped?

So like i said i really have no idea why someone would tag a trailer, unless there is something to do with commercial business.

Our CAM 10K tandem EQ trailer registered as 'camp' (not for hire) here in CT for years now. Always had title in hand.

here, if you have a 'home built' trailer, all it needs is a weight slip to prove unloaded weight, then it is registered and tagged according to weight just like any other trailer.

If they hassle me much more I'm gonna ask them to just tag it as home built... it's becoming evident that the state government is too big for it's own pants if they can't tag a trailer.... man.. I need a govt job.. get paid and don't do yer job.. :)

So what did it take? Did your brand of trailer finally appear in their computer as an acceptable choice?

Yep.

here's what the problem boiled down to. the traielr manufacturers name was too simillar to another manufacturer. ( there is a character limit and longer names just get cut off.. the 2 manufacturers happened to have the same spelling up to the cutoff point.. go figure.. ) so they abbreviated my manufacturers name.

I had the same problem registering a little HF trailer years ago. The mfr was something like Lai Cheh, something a westerner wouldn't know how to abbreviate the same way next time. The clerk guessed an abbreviation but that didn't match anything in the computer. She was at a standstill.

At least in that case the supervisor stopped by, knew the answer, and got the process moving again.
