Quick question...do these things do a good job? What's best to put in them for weight?

Yes, lawn rollers work well, generally speaking. Alot of it depends on what your looking to do, or the results you expect. I think most people use water to fill their rollers. Weight can be regulated by the amount of water added, and water is relatively inexpensive and easily disposable.
Perhaps a little more info on your project/problem? Oh, and make sure the roller is at least as wide as your rear tires.
