Another update: Put the new fuel bowl housing on it, replaced all old rubber lines in the system and that cleared up all the leaks. Still runs like crap for a bit when i start it cold after sitting a few days but it does clear up a lot quicker. Maybe 10-15 seconds now. The trick where you cycle the glow plugs again as it's sputtering seems to help a lot too. Starts without giving it any throttle at all when it's warm too, which it wouldn't do before. Thanks for all the input guys. I wouldn't have known that this was normal behavior without your help. I think I'm going to call this issue fixed now.

After the rebuild did you time the fuel pump by chance.
So, turns out there's a fine adjustment using shims on the injection pump. I remembered your question Robin and stumbled across this info in the repair manual today. I didn't realize there was any adjustment beyond lining up the timing marks on the timing gears. I guess you can tell I'm fairly new to diesel engines lol. Anyway, I'm going to check the timing when I get a chance. From my research if this is the problem, it would appear my injection pump timing is retarded. Will cause hard starting even if everything else is perfect I'm told.

Well you might be on to something. Keep us postedâ€¦đŸ˜‰
No dice. Checked the timing today. It's right on the money. I think I should just leave well enough alone.
