I had another friend look at it (actually a MB tech) with a high powered light. He almost thinks he see's a crack. Uh oh. We all know I destroyed 2 snowblower driveshafts this past winter and who know what they banged up against :(

Im going to call the dealer today. The center PTO shaft is actually not leaking at all, or might have been, but isnt now. Since its under warranty, do you think they will replace the whole transmission? Ive looked at a few diagrams and it doesnt look like a fun job to split that part of the case, and then who knows how good the tech will be at sealing it. One of my friends suggested JB weld, but not on an almost brand new tractor. If it is cracked (maybe I can get some macro pics later), I want a new tranny or that part of the case.

I added have a gallon ofd $UDT to it yesterday (it leaked that much in about 2-3 weeks). I then mowed for 4-5 hours with it. It only leaks when its cold, and in the morning I will see the puddle. Maybe the case when hot, expands and closes the joint/crack. I guess I will find out soon. Dont want to leak too much more of this stuff out, its expensive!!!

Will keep you updated...

I would do 3 things first.
1. find the torque specs of those bolts holding tranny case together and torque them and recheck for leaks after use.
2. get jbweld anyway to save your sudt from leaking all over before you can get it repaired. You don't want it all over your yard do you? like you said- its expensive.
3. get mechanic with uv dye and light and check for cracks and consider your two options. either replace casing or weld it shut.

Not trying to alarm anyone, but you might want to look at this thread:

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/kubota-owning-operating/207970-so-how-much-trouble-am.html

Can't seem to get an update from the op, but I have seen the results, and I am concerned for his financial well-being.

Hopefully this does not relate to your situation, or if it does, you insurance will cover it.

PS: Sorry about Sam, I have a 9 year old lab myself & am dreading that day...

One point asked in that thread that matters here too, is do you have the Kubota insurance. I gather that KTAC insurance is much like collision on a car, and has less to do with warranty, and more to do with you having a functioning tractor in the end.

I do have insurance. KTAC to be exact. I already used it once on my blower.

Going to the dealer now with pictures

Even better news is that I just got back from the dealer, talking to my favorite mechanic, and they will warranty it no questions asked. We also compared the amount of "slop" in the mid PTO to a older used unit they had there. Mine was 3 times as bad. So he will probably replace those bearings as well. The only bad news is that he could have it a week or a month! I hope the grass stops mowing. I can always borrow my old JD from my father ;)

It looks like you are all set, and on the road to recovery, and I am glad.

Radioman,

I agree with your philosophies. The bolts are tight. I dont want to tighten them any harder cause aluminum will strip easy. I thought that this thing only leaked when it was cold, but last night while wrenching in the garage, I noticed a pool of SUDT on top of my mowing deck. So much for that theory.

The mechanic is going to order a new side case regardless, and then when apart, see if there is crack or whatnot anywhere on the adjoining case. If the other has a crack in it, might be new tranny time. I am going to put something on it in the meantime to try and stop it from leaking. Hopefully the lawn doesnt grow too fast since its been so dry lately, however its raining all day today...

Well the dealer still has it but the mechanic said it might be ready today. He seperated the case "halves" that it was leaking from and resealed it. He said last week it hasnt leaked since but wanted to keep it over the weekend to make sure. Hopefully she is all set. I will know more this afternoon. I need to cut my lawn!
