...but if you leave it in the up position won't that damage the relief valve itself?

Not really, but you would be heating up your hydro fluid for no good reason.

But who would do that, anyway? As soon as you hear the valve, you'll figure out what you did wrong and put the lever back down. It's a pretty straightforward cause-and-effect.

I just realized everyone is talking about using the 3pt with the BH connected. I am pretty sure the owners manual says do not try to operate the 3pt valve with the BH hydraulic hoses connected that it could damage the valve. There is even a locking bracket to hold the 3pt handle in the lower position according to the manual. Don't know why or how this all ties together, but it is in the owners manual. Just thought you should know.

All of the B2x20, and B3200 / B3300 SU's I've seen with a backhoe mounted have a bracket around the 3pt lever when the hoe is attached so it can't be moved.
