For the sake of discussion, lets consider two loader buckets. The first is the traditional fabricated bucket that is mostly square-ish and made from multiple flat sheets of steel. The second is the "round back" bucket that has a radius at the back of the bucket.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each design and what purpose is each type ideally suited for? Is one "better" than the other and why?

The buckets would be used on a tractor FEL, not a skid loader. I'm aware that there are many, many specialised buckets for skid loaders.

Round back loaders clean out better, typically have a higher volume, and are usually a little more expensive. Make sure you get one with a replaceable cutting edge.

I have both for my L3700. The o Ethan is on it more often than the other is the round back. Mostly because it's a 72" and my other one is a 66". In all honesty, my favorite one for the tractor is my 72" skidsteer bucket.. It has a long bottom and is easier to see the pile in front of it, and when it's full. Problem is that it's heavy and the QA is low to the ground and can scrape if I'm not careful about it.

At least with Kubota;the round-back is considered heavy duty.

Yep, and it does cost a little more but I think it is worth it. Had one on my old L4200 and also have the round-back bucket on my new L5060.

Round back buckets are a easier to clean out when used for hauling sticky items. Example would be hauling concrete instead of using a wheelbarrow. Same applies for some types of soils it seems to me.

On my M7060 I have the 72" round back bucket. It's great I like it but I feel for the size of the tractor,
The capacity isn't enough. I might try the 84" large bucket, but I don't know how it'll hold up to gravel and dirt. I'll definitely need another cutting edge/ tooth bar for that one. That 84 inch bucket is about $1200 from my dealer
