I would go with a metal deck and brakes on at least one axle.

Caver, aren't you in the utility trailer capital of the world?

Sort of, many of the smaller places have gone under when the economy tanked. My friend owns JaMar and I think he just builds specialty trailers to haul combine headers.

For what you are planning on doing a single axle should do the job for you. I think a second axle will be 2 more tires to give you problems. The only advantage I can think of on a 2 axle for you is you will have brakes. If you wanna go with a 2 axle get at least a 16' car trailer because it will be more versatile and give you room to grow. A car trailer won't have the rail around it so stuff can be loaded over the side. A car trailer won't have a gate to catch air either.

Go tandem axle, at least 16 ft. if you plan on hauling the Quads. Pulls straighter, less bouncing and "tugging" on the truck when you hit a bump. You may find that you have more friends after you buy a brand new trailer. See if they have a low profile rear gate that hinges in the middle.

I had a friend with a nice tandem axle car trailer that was constantly being asked to loan it out. He kept the tires half inflated and told the guys he had four tires that needed repairs. No one wanted to pay to fix his tires and he didn't have to turn them down. For his buddies, he'd just fire up his air compressor.

If you want to keep a short gate then look into a dove tail. That let's you drop to a 3 ft gate and sets it lower so as to not catch as much air.

Single axle trailers are easy to move or turn by hand if they are balanced decently, and that is a big plus. Single axle trailers can be ordered with brakes. The maintenance cost is half for brakes or tires.
A 3500# axle and radial tires makes a good pulling unit.

I tow a 1400 lb tractor on a 1020 lb single-axle trailer, although that is infrequent.

(NOTE: Tractor is hauled without the rotary cutter shown in the photo. I was just taking the whole unit to a truck scale for weighing on the day I took that photo)

Most of the time the trailer is carrying about 900 lbs or so (garden tractor and walk-behind brush mower) . Have not had any issues so far. Seems to tow fine.

As to "bouncing" when empty, it might a little but not a big deal, and anything that adds a little tongue weight cures that quick.

A concern for me was the empty weight of the trailer. I am bumping-up against the max tow weight of the vehicle, and a bigger trailer would be heavier, and thus carry a smaller load.

Another concern was storing the thing. I live in a typical suburban subdivision and I use it to haul equipment to some rural land I own. A bigger trailer would be harder for me to keep at "home."

I have no regrets at going single axle over tandem.
