I kept one tire, as it was the only good one left. It's about to get a rim and become yet another spare. I plan on mounting a second spare on the trailer. I take a few "road trips" every winter with trailer in tow. (I do equipment auctions all over the place during slow season) After this experience, I want to be prepaired.

All the local tire stores require you to sign a waiver if you TAKE the old tires. They have a built-in disposal fee in their tire prices for dealing with the old ones. Their numbers of throw-aways must match with their sales #'s. (Has to do with local waste disposal laws I was told)

It's getting to where "THE MAN" even has his nose in your trash these days............................. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Oops - sorry, my apologies, don't mean to offend or cause problems - thanks for the 'netiquite reminder.

What I will take away from this experience:

Yesterday I completed a re-design of my spare tire carrier on the trailer. It now carries two complete spare tire/wheels. There's a better jack in the toolbox, along with a longer jack handle. New lug wrench too.

Tires on the trailer, as well as both spares are new. Air pressure will be checked on spares when checking those mounted directly on trailer axles.

Tires will be rotated more frequently. Spares will go into the rotation also. Tires and wheels will come off the trailer a couple times per year for balancing.

And at the slightest hint of vibration, tires will be inspected closely.

The stretch of highway where I had my blow-out was the scene of two fatal traffic accidents last week. One killed 4 people. (3 teens on their way to school in one car) BOTH were caused by tire failure. There's 5 people dead, resulting from the same thing I walked away from. I don't need to be hit over the head to learn my lesson.

PLEASE! PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE CONDITION OF YOUR TIRES. NOT JUST THE ONES ON YOUR TRAILER, BUT ON EVERY VEHICLE YOU OWN. YOUR LIFE, AND THE LIVES OF OTHERS MAY DEPEND ON THEM.

It sounds like maybe there is some debris on that part of the highway.

Maybe some street cleaning would be in order.

It's a rough finished concrete, high speed (65MPH speed limit/75MPH in "real world") connector highway that runs between two major interstates. It sees a LOT of local traffic that seldom goes that speed EXCEPT for this stretch of road. The Hi-way has off/on ramps every couple miles. LOTS of merging traffic. It's elevated slightly above the surrounding country-side. That lets wind play a big role in how cars handle. That factor also tends to make it ice up in the winter time. (Hence the nick-name it has. Road is the "Gene Snyder Freeway, known to locals as the Gene Slider)

The median is a drainage ditch basically, and both sides are mostly rock out-cropping, ditches, hils, or guardrails. No place to go when there's trouble. It's just a poorly designed road.

It connects all the major residential suburbs of the Louisville area to interstates that run into the heart of the city. Morning and afternoon traffic is horrible.

ALL THE FACTORS FOR MANY TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS........................

And any debris would be left from yesterdays round of car crashes.
