My Mom was a great historian. When she died I inherited her picture collection. Going back to pre-WWII. I cherish them beyond monetary value. Every year we have a Thanksgiving lunch with everyone that can make it. I always have the pics out for anyone to peruse thru. I always get questions about them. I mostly can answer those questions. When each generation dies off information is lost.....

So true. I remember very little of my grandmother talking about life during the depression. When I was growing up, WW2 seemed like ancient history, yet in the late 60s and 70s when I was in school , it was only 25-30 yrs prior. That’s like me looking back to the mid 90s now.

Isn't that profound!!! The difference of 20 years as a kid versus now. Mind blowing.

I repair them as part of my business. It’s rewarding. Saddest thing is seeing them tore down
Even sadder to see them long-neglected and falling down. I can understand somewhat though...farming has been on the decline here for decades, and maintaining those old barns is probably a low priority. I'd imagine just re-roofing one would cost a fortune!

I did a re-roof about 6 years ago and it was $15,000 IIRC.

The problem with the old barns is that they are not accessible with modern equipment. Who wants to buck hay into a haymow when you need to spear a 600 lb. round bale and feed it out? If they were an economically viable building, they would be maintained. They are not. Their best and highest use is to convert them into a kitschy house or venue for country weddings. Farming, not so much.

Depends. If its structurally sound, you can run a skid steer in and out of a bank barn and put thousands of small squares in it. That’s what I did. You could also back wagons into it and unload by hard. Horses or cows underneath still works. Or tractor attachment or smaller tractor storage if you remove stalls.

Some not all, many are just to expensive to justify repairing when they get in poor shape.
Many at least around here are on stacked rock foundations/footers that have shifted and settled of the decades.

Yeah its pretty obvious the one in his picture id too far gone. Depends on how good/bad the “bones” are
