Lighting for the pole barn

If you actually want the heat from the bulbs, then you don't want high efficiency lights. The "waste" from low efficiency lights is heat.

In my shop I have T8s for the summer and I switch in some halogen for the winter. I really like the light from the halogen bulbs. (Separate light fixtures, separate switches).

I just ordered a 30 W LED wall pack light made by cooper lighting. I plan on installing it on the exterior of my pole shed above the overhead door. I wanted LED so that I can have the flexibility of adding a photocell and leaving it on all the time to light the driveway with low energy useage. The specs from cooper say that the 30 W LED is the equivilant light output to their 175 Metal Halide fixture. $215

I just finished a 50x40 with 12' walls on the first floor and put in six 400w metal halide lights I picked up for $10 each with bulbs. when those suckers come on, takes a couple minutes to get to full output, it is better then having the three overhead doors open in the middle of the day.

I have extra's that I would sell you for the same $10 a piece and they are just south of you in Warsaw.

I wire lights in so many sheds , barns and shops every year i get sick thinking about it. I agree with eddie though, fo a 24x24 you cant beat 4 sets of 8 foot long tandem T8 florescent lights. They eat up about 140 watts wer fixture but put out an amazing amount of light per watt.

Cost per fixture is less than $60 incl bulbs. Lamp life is in the 8-10 year range under most conditions.

The LED lights might seem like a good idea due to energy use , lamp life etc.... but with the amount of energy used operating a florescent light...especially only a part time usage fixture, you'll never save enough $$$$ to ever pay for the LED fixture in the first place.

I reciently buckled down and replaced the old (17 YO) Mercury vapor wallpack light on my shop with an LED retrofit kit only because the old fixture was nearing its end of life (bulb brightness). I figured id try out the new 40 watt LED retrofit kit offered at my supply house. Its supposed to replace a 175 watt MH or HPS fixture. Cost was $130.00. Easy install, and works great. Now the bad news. I only use this light maybe 1 hour a day in winter when running snow removal equipment. Figure 10 hours a week (High end) x 16 weeks = 160 hours. Old light would have cost 160 hours x 175 watts = 28KW of power @ 0.06/KWH here in Idaho....total cost of operating this light for winter was $1.68/year

New light 40 x 160 = 6.4 KW/year X 0.06 = $0.38/year. thats a savings of $1.30 /year . so in 100 years the light will have paid for itself.

kinda not worth it id say. I only did this to see how these retrofit kits work and install as i have some large commercial businesses that are thinking of retrofitting their parking lots. In these cases it may be worth it. I havnt yet sat down to see how the numbers crunch out yet.

I know it is probably not worth it..... But I still wanted to try.
Also I am thinking of adding a photocell so it is on from dusk till dawn. December and January it is dark from 4 pm until 830 am 16.5 hours a day. I am hoping the light isn't to bright, as I just want to get a bit of a glow to the driveway area to assist In walking around at night. Right now it is blacker than ink.

the 40 watt led i just installed actually hurts my eyes if i look at the fixture at night. the light IS equivalent to the old mercury vapor light i had there. Personally, until the cost per fixture drops...alot... i wont be adding any more, and i probably wont recommend it to anyone unless they have a commercial parking lot or storage facility. for someone running it all night long will recover their original cost in about 7 years.

i hope that in the near future the prices of QUALITY lamps will drop. Ive seen alot of cheap Chinese crap on the market, and doubt they will last very long. I actually saw some LED 60 watt equiv on the shelves that had no heat shield,.... those are doomed to fail... but they were inexpensive .. hehe

Yeah, you have to be careful with the brands. I have a little 1.5W LED that is a 25W equivalent, but that is just for the valence at the top of the stairs in the house, so no great light output required, but I still got the Phillips over the Feit. I got tired of changing out those stupid compact fluorescents all the time.

In my opinion, Feit has got to be the worst brand name out there in terms of cheap quality. Yeah, the cost is low, but wow do they cut corners! I was going to pick up some more LED lighting at Costco until I realized they were all Feit brand crap.

Just my two cents regarding T-8 fixtures. I like the light they put out. I upgraded old T-5 lights the last couple years as they began to fail. I have found that the least expensive T-8 lights, and the middle of the road T-8 Lights all have CRAP ballasts the might work wellf or a while. They will kill your FM radio reception. If you want nice T-8 lights and want to listen to your boom box, you gotta go to an electrical supply house and indicate you want the best. To reinforce what I say, google flourescent lights and FM Radio reception.

I paid $42 each for my 8-foot T8 fixtures at this area's electrical supply house. It didn't occur to me to ask for the best because I guess I just figured that's what they would give me. I have yet to turn a radio on in the garage while the lights are on so I guess I'll find out if I got good ones then. What do the cheap 8-foot fixtures cost at the big box stores?
