Liquid or granular residential lawn care?

LOL, I didnt even look at it per acre. I just looked at it what it would take to fill the sprayer correctly at 25 gallons...6 oz to 25 gals I figure rounding up and easier to measure, 7 to be sure. I couldn't imagine using over 170 gallons of solution for an acre if I went 4 gal per 1000 sq ft.. The math looks correct, but seems extremely heavy. I can smell the 24D in the air when I am done and the weeds die, all though I think trimec works better on the clover or my solution is just weak. At the 5000 sq ft treated area I would really be creeping along to spread the 20 gals which wouldn't even make a full round trip. The length of the field is about 500 ft.. My $.02, it works for me. Going to try the trimec again though as there is some weed in the ditch the 24D wont touch. Some small oval leafed thing that looks like a ground cover.

Yep, my 1st application of straight 2,4-D [3x stronger than yours] didn't eliminate the clover either. Seemed to give it a good initial knockdown, but it came back looking pretty unfazed to me. I also have what I think may be 'spurge' in my turf that survived the first spraying too. Had to try the least expensive route first, but now it time for some tough love. I'm giving Trimec a go as it adds Dicamba for better clover kill. Unfortunately, my TSC only had (2) 1gal jugs in stock, so I just used that mixed with the 2,4-D I had on hand. It ended up being about 1/2 the recommended Trimec dose, hopefully still enough Dicamba to be effective. If not, next time 100% Trimec! We'll see. BTW, I did a good job 'pin-striping' the yard with the liquid fertilzer!

Until this year all I'd used were granular products since I did not have a boom sprayer. I always was dissapointed with their weed control.

This season I bought a boom sprayer & tried out 24D w/great results on everything but the clover. I'll try something else out on the clover next time.

The liquid worked so well I'm never going to use granular for weed control again!

Don't worry about the clover. I think it comes back no matter what you spray on it. It's a good thing anyway. Do worry about your tomatoes though. If you spray 2,4-D anywhere near tomatoes they will curl up. On another note, I was showing a friend some things I had done in the yard. I mentioned that I had sprayed 2,4-D that day. He wandered back into the house while I was talking to his girlfriend's parents. He apologized later for walking away and said the 2,4-D was getting to him. Some folks are very sensitive to it. I bought a 25 gallon spot sprayer made by Ag Spray. I'm building a dedicated carry all for it. Got to put up some storm doors first.

Took a pic of two little visitors in the back yard, then a couple of the lawn from the 2nd floor and lastly a turf close up. This is how the lawn looked just before the 2nd weed n' feed. Since then, we've had a bunch of rain and right now it looks great! Mowing w/ a B7610 and RCK60 on loaded R4s.

Quick update... took these pics a couple of weeks after the 2nd weed application (50% Amine 400/50% Trimec). I also added the Gordons Lawn & Pasture Liquid Fertilizer at the same time. After a few weeks of heat and rain, it looks a whole lot better than it did after two years of neglect.

Looks great !!!

I started spraying our lawn last years after many years of no spraying ...... it's taking awhile to kill off all the weeds that managed to infest the place.

Well, I had to dig up the application rate info in this thread so I figured I'd post this year's game plan as well.

The commercial supply has recommended:

- 1st spray cocktail of:

1.) Lesco 023899 - PRE-M 3.3 EC TURF (pre and early post-emergent crabgrass)

2.) Lesco 858123 - TRIAMINE II (broadleaf control)

3.) Lesco 052447 - GREEN FLO 18-3-6 50%CRN Slow Release (healthy root growth promotion)

4.) Lesco 084043 - IRON + CHELATED 12N 6FE 2MN (top greening)

5.) Lesco 082007 - SEVIN SL (grub and pest control)

- 2nd spray cocktail of #'s 2, 3, 4, 5
- 3rd spray cocktail of #'s 2, 3, 4
- 4th spray cocktail of #'s 3, 4, 5 (+2, if necessary)
- 5th spray cocktail of #'s 2, 3, 4

Anyone use these products or care to comment?

Dholly & all who replied, This thread is just what I have been looking for...:)

First let me say that the getting cooperation from the weather and work schedules keeps getting in the way of my personal life :( Wanting wet grass for spreading granular weed control has been a waiting game... I lost again.

So I have "just started thinking" lately about large scale (for me) spraying about 4 ac. Then probably my neighbor as well (3 or so ac.), He kinda keeps me busy when possible ...

All this info is great and I plan on using it for a spray rig for weed/grub control then spreading granular fert when po$$ible... But I do have a question.. I am thinking of mounting a spray rig on my ATV (polaris w/ hi-lo trans) using low and trying to maintain steady speed which may prove a little tricky vs. going with the tractor carry-all method any pro's/con's that I can't think of ??

The ATV rig is 25gal. not very big before refill time, but easy manueverability, What was your final cost for the tractor rig? trying to weigh the cost vs. benefits of both... Thanks
