Liquid Seal Question

I am replacing my diffy housing and need to get seals for the PTO, outer axles, Hydrolic Plate, and connection to transmission housing (transmission is sealed from the diffy). I am not able to find the paper seals that don't need to be shipped (5-10 days).

Can I use a gasket liquid sealer like permatex and still get a good seal that will last 3-5 years and still let the hydrolic unit vacuum seal.

What is a good hydrolic/ trans fluid that works well in the diffy that helps keep older parts working and not to expensive? Need 13 gallons.

I do not know what to say about the gasket. I have made many of my own gaskets depending where they go on the vehicle and if I can find the gasket material. I only use Permatex as a last resort to replace regular gaskets.

Get you some gasket material or even some heavy single ply cardboard. Hold it to the housing and use the big end of a ballpien hammer to cut out the larger areas of the gasket. Then use the small end of the hammer to cut out the holes. I have made many a gasket that way. It is quicker that you might think.

Jerry is on the right track. If you are lucky, your axle trumpet to diffy housing gaskets will list a thickness. if so.. hit napa or carquest and buy a roll of the gasket paper int hat range.

In many tractors, the trumpet to diffe gaskets are used to control bearing preload.. and that is VERY important.

Also.. on any mating joint that is holding back hyd pressure.. i would also go with the oem material and thickness gasket.. not some 'goo' The cheif reason for hyd gasket failure in ford N tractors is someone that is too cheap to buy the 1$ gasket between the pump and the housing, and used rtv, and then a month after the tractor is sold, the rtv pushes out and the new owner gets to rebuild the hyds.

The walmart universal tractor oil seems to be fine. it meets lotsa tractor specs.. including the CNH 134d spec, which is the important one to me.. My ford 7610s and 5000 have about 48 qts of that in each of them..

A nickel's worth of free advice. While you have the rear end stripped out, tighten the lower link pivot pins that stick out of the axle trumpets. (or removing differential carrier/ring gear) They tighten from the INSIDE, and cannot be got at without removing the axle trumpet. They do come loose with use and age. Every time you have the opportunity to put a wrench on them, do it. If the get ever-so-slightly loose, using the 3-point will loosen them up a LOT, and fast. hydraulic oil will leak out. (Had this happen on an F-40 Ferguson and an MF 50. Both almost identical tractors)

Hope all goes well on your rebuild. I have a warm spot in my heart for the 40/50/150 series Massey's.
