locking up new tractor

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that some of these machines will start with the magic key (screwdriver). Simply set the throttle up, find the starter, set the screwdriver across the solenoid terminals, and off she goes. My Kubota 4610 has a warning sticker essentially saying "don't start it by shorting across the solenoid."

I did this a few times after I'd misplaced the key to a ford 1700 (it was mine, though /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif).

I used to start a 4020JD by jumping across the solenoid all the time. Then I figured out that a peice of baling wire with the correct bends in it made a great key. I doubt it would work on the new ignition switches they have now days though.

It may not be a deterrant BUT when you throw 6 ft. of dirt on them they won't do it again

I don't think I've seen a peice of metal that is too big to smoke wrench off... if it is.. it is probably to big for you to hook it up to your tractor.... by yourself anyway!

My thought is, if someone is going to steal it, they are going to steal it no matter what you do to stop it. As much as I would love to sleep on my tractor I just can't. Insurance is your best I guess. I do let mine set outside during the summer but I keep it close to the house. The key is kept out of the tractor. During the winter I keep it in the garage where it is warm.

Boy, after reading all these post on how to lock up a tractor and keep it from wandering off, I either feel realy stupid or extremely secure.
My tractor sits here in my yard with a full tank of fuel and the key in the ignition. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Mark,

It is kind of scary?? But what can you do. I am kind of like you. I leave it all over the place, I do take the key out. Maybe someone has a GPS device that you could put under the hood kind of like my Suburban has. General Motors can tell where my car is at all times. But even then someone who really knows what they are doing could unplug it I suppose.

Even if my wife locks the keys in the suburban, she can call them on her cell phone and they can unlock it by satellite. Kind of kewl and interesting.

thcri,

Don't lock the cell phone in the car. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't say that or she will. She never has the cell in the right place when she needs it.

But I use to have this really nice girl friend. She was great. Anytime we would go someplace she would always make sure to lock her door for me. But she would always forget to roll up the window.
