Once you split wood vertically sitting on a stool, not a chair, you’ll never split horizontally again.

I am using the 4 in 1 to get hheavier pieces on the table, redgum is no lightweight and a 12 x 20 piece is a two man lift with a lot of bad language

Once you get a horizontal splitter with a 4 way in the end you’ll never split wood in the ground again.

I tried it. Miserable experience, can't get any leverage when trying to rotate a 150 lb chunk, constant up/down to keep pieces within reach of the sstool, in a word, much slower and harder than horizontal...at least for me. I only go verticle to bust big roundss to a size I can lift onto the horizontal position. Most times I will noodle rather than wrestling a big round into position for vertical splitting.

My best buddy did that sitting on a round but he can dead lift 700 lbs. and bench press 550 lbs. He's a Navy Seal and one **** of a man. He's also half my age but I had to use the tractor to push rounds close enough for him to reach.
He got transferred to the East Coast last June and it about broke my heart.

It is more or less impossible for most folk to do on a stool unless they vastly outweigh the rounds they're cutting and they have a really good back. Most average folk need their legs under them to do much with anything that weighs the same (or more) than their body weight.

I bought one of those $300 electric splitters and the Wife loves it. Quiet and no engine stink. She thoroughly enjoys splitting wood.

I try to get big chunks for the fireplace out of my 22 ton unit but then I always have a difficult time starting the fires in the morning. An acquaintance and I were talking splitters and he said he had am electric one he would sell to me for $100 so I took it, even though I told myself I would never have one of this dinky little things. I have it sitting on a bench in my shop and whenever I go out there I split a couple wedges and bring them to the house for starting the fires. It works great for my 2x2s. Love little splitters.

For bending over and lifting to the splitter, forget that. Just roll them on a pallet and lift everything with the tractor plus it works for a table once the first two pieces open up a corner. Tractor and splitter.jpg

^^ That's about all I can see them for. Making one or two last cracks if you have a piece just a little too big for the stove. I might not mind having on inside near the stove, but I'd never try to use one outside to crack logs initially. At least none of any size.

This is my first year with a hydraulic and so far I haven't had any trouble moosing 24-30" oak rounds into place. Roll em, tip em, crack em, rotate em, crack em, repeat as necessary, tossing the chunks aside. Trying to use the loader to raise them to the table and balance the larger split off chunks seems like it would be a whole lot more tricky.

I cut everything, including the big ones over a wagon, then I can easily slide them right onto my splitters beam, no heavy lifting for me.

I push everything through my splitters 4-way, it goes pretty fast...
