our scrap dealers make you remove tires and all fluids, and unit must be disassembled to small pieces.. at least smaller than a tractor

Hey all, I've never really posted here but use the forums all the time for help.

I've always wanted to restore an old Ford. So I have a neighbor that turns out has one in the woods behind his house. I'll post the pictures I took today of it and get y'alls input.

I'm looking at a complete resto project that I can take easy and learn about old iron. The owner is a bit proud of it and is currently looking for 800$. I offered 400$ and we're going back and forth right now.

What I know it needs -

Engine re-done - owner says "it runs on 3 cylinders"

Not sure of hydraulics but owner claims they work great

Definitely needs new back tires - front are ok

Paint

Wiring

Once again, I'm planning on complete resto so I'm not really wanting to offer much more than scrap value - am I being too cheap? Is the 800 worth it? It's been sitting in the woods for years and they have no intention of doing anything with it so I am hoping they will see a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Thanks so much for looking and your advice gentlemen

our only 2 local scrappers are renyolds contractors.

no rad fluid.. no water, no oil, no rubber.. pieces no bigger than 3' long or must be torch cut or disassembled. can be mixed metal.. but you only get paid for whichever is cheaper. ie starter and gens get paid as iron.. no copper value...

radiators have to be removed from whatever you bring in.

that's why down here.. I don't even look at buying a tractor solely from the standpoint that I may want to scrap it. too much work to do unless I'm paying 50-150$ for the tractor.

on the other hand. i have bought tractors with blown engines or blown tranny.. diffy, etc.. cheap, removed all the good parts, then scrapped the dead block or busted cases after getting al the good parts off I wanted... not much money in the iron there.. but i got my money in good parts.. etc. different reasons.. etc.

After reading Soundguy's post about the carburetor I forgot to ask him about that. So I called him back and he said he took the carb off and rebuilt it for his 8n, but realized a NAA carb doesn't fit a 8n hahaha. So he claims he's got a fresh rebuilt NAA carb that will go with it.

The issue I am having now is basically that he thinks it's a jewel, and the truth is it needs work.

One more thing that scares me that maybe you guys can help me with - he ran it on 3 cylinders for several hours about 2 years ago before putting it up to sit. (scrape bladed his dirt driveway, did some bushhogging). What type of secondary damage can doing this cause?

By the way, it's not going anywhere, so I'm still sitting at 400 for now. I need to go look at it again and somehow see just how bad some of the parts are (hydraulics, cylinder, etc) Also like Soundguy said I need to see if it was winterized as even down here in Alabama we had a very cold winter.

One other thing I'm nervous about that has haunted me in the past is getting into something like this "just cause it's a Jubilee" and would have been better just doing an 8n or something with more available parts. It's just something about that model that I think is a really sharp looking tractor restored. I know it's kind of stupid, but ever since I saw my first '53 Jubilee I have always wanted one.

I have another neighbor who wants me to look at his dad's tractor who recently passed away. It's a 60's something Ford with a diesel but unfortunately that's all I know for now. I will post pics next week after I look at it.

The Jubilee was a very popular model....and a nicely restored Jube would be a pleasure to own. However.....I may look long and hard....but I know I could find a better candidate for a resto.

Paying more upfront and less down the road may prove to be a wiser choice.....IMO.

THeres 2 tractor yards about 125 miles away. THey will give about 500 to 750 for a smaller tractor like those. One wont sell a whole tractor. It would be disassembled and checked and catalogs and put in warehouses. THe other would put it in the yard for you pick parts or sale as a whole. Un prepped scrap is about 8.5 cents/pound. My dumb BIL laughed at me for giving 250 for 2 and half AC B tractors. Both had bad blocls and the other was just a rear end. I got 450 for the right final drive, then 25 for the water pump off one, 275 for the wide front then reduced that to 200 for the tricycle front off that tractor. I know Ill have to sit on the hulls a while but Ive made some money for now.

Clean up a burnt barn about 3 months ago. had n old locked up Cub in the fire. I sold it in parts to some friends. The torque tube on it went to a mane that had one busted on his for 500. Im down to a few crumbs lol.
