running on 3 cy;s didn't hurt it. now.. that said.. whatever made it run on 3 cyls might be an issue.. but generally is an ignition issue.. in rare cases you see bad stuff like a stuck valve or holed piston.. etc. ( again why I said you can't offer much on a non runner!! )

soundguy

After reading Soundguy's post about the carburetor I forgot to ask him about that. So I called him back and he said he took the carb off and rebuilt it for his 8n, but realized a NAA carb doesn't fit a 8n hahaha. So he claims he's got a fresh rebuilt NAA carb that will go with it.

The issue I am having now is basically that he thinks it's a jewel, and the truth is it needs work.

One more thing that scares me that maybe you guys can help me with - he ran it on 3 cylinders for several hours about 2 years ago before putting it up to sit. (scrape bladed his dirt driveway, did some bushhogging). What type of secondary damage can doing this cause?

By the way, it's not going anywhere, so I'm still sitting at 400 for now. I need to go look at it again and somehow see just how bad some of the parts are (hydraulics, cylinder, etc) Also like Soundguy said I need to see if it was winterized as even down here in Alabama we had a very cold winter.

One other thing I'm nervous about that has haunted me in the past is getting into something like this "just cause it's a Jubilee" and would have been better just doing an 8n or something with more available parts. It's just something about that model that I think is a really sharp looking tractor restored. I know it's kind of stupid, but ever since I saw my first '53 Jubilee I have always wanted one.

since you are really keen on wanting a jube.. lets go a step further and make sure it is one. that 50$ badge can be swapped easy.

look on the trans bellhousing aft of the starter.. there is an angled boss there that will start with NAA and then a serial number.

early naa were made in the end of 52, then in 53 they caleld them jubilee for the aniversery edition, then in 54 it was back to just being an NAA. both the 52 naa and 54 naa are technically more rare than the 53 naa dubbed jubilee. I've seen hundreds of naa sold as jubes.. that were simply naa.. etc.

post the sn.

if no sn on the trans bellhousing, look on the block, front, under the head, near manifold. very early models had a sn there. occasionally you get a unit that had an early engine, thus sn on engine, and it had a late engine repalcement.. and thus end up with NO sn.. or vs a vs.. and have an engine and trans sn.. etc.

The Jubilee was a very popular model....and a nicely restored Jube would be a pleasure to own. However.....I may look long and hard....but I know I could find a better candidate for a resto.

Paying more upfront and less down the road may prove to be a wiser choice.....IMO.

ditto that for sure.

I grug home a naa that was down on tires and had a tree across it.. bad hyds and charge system.. took me an entire summer to rehab, and I paid more to rehab it than it cost to buy.. by a long shot.

same deal on a 950 rowcrop I drug home from a muck pond. had to go down to bare chassie on that thing, replaced half the parts on it that were wore slap out. easilly quadrupled my investment into it making it look and run good.

On the other hand I've bought better models that only needed a month of work and 500-600$ to make them look as good as units that took me entire summers or winters.. and 2000$ in parts and materials.

That 950 cost me plenty in sheet metal alone.. starter, genny, pto shaft.. had to repair 3pt and open diffy for lift arm pins.. 85% of the bolts and studs were broke off in it.. had to drill out / retap many.. had to buy all salvage brackets for the engine and fuel tank and battery box.. had to rebuild steering.. and parts for the front pedistal are hard to come by.. tires and rims were shot.. took me a full extra winter making the rear power adjust rims presentable.. .. everything on the tractor was pretty much shot, except the transmission. I would have been better off to have salvaged the trans, and parted the rest out.. would have actually made money on it that way..

that's the issue you can get into on one of these things. buy a 500$ tractor and put 2500$ or parts into it, and that's if the engine and trans don't need work. plus months of your time.. easy to turn into a 4000$ project fast!

Here's a video journal of my dealings with that 950. stretched out over a year to finish. tin that came on the tractor was unuseable.. it don't show.. but unit was originally on propane and they torched out the entire top of the sheet metal ruining it. and then only halfway did a working conversion to gas. i had to scrap all that and totally repalce the fuel system, including the vw fuel tank they used hose to tie into place... that job took me from a cheap, but runs, tractor, to a whole long ride of repairs and salvaged repalcement parts.

still.. it was fun.. :)

I followed your 950 project closely. What a beautiful resto job!

Sound, isn't this the number you were asking about to make sure it's a jube?

036vz.jpg

It reads NAA 70068

According to the web, that should be a true Jubilee.

Thanks,

Painer

NOOOO! I already mentioned back on page 1, post #7 that was a RAISED CASTING NUMBER.. not a sn...

you need to look for a HAND STAMPED NUMBER on the trans bellhousing!, or possibly the block, if an early unit.

here are pics of the early and late sn locations

I've restored several old tractors, some similar to the one you are talking about. Yes, it does need lots of work and yes, parts can get pretty expensive, not to mention all the hard work involved. You can do what you want, but I personally would not give more than what you've already offered, $400 for it. I don't know what it would bring as scrap, but if it's worth another $100 bucks or so as scrap, it wouldn't be worth it to me to load it up and haul it to the scrap yard for a hundred dollars difference for the owner. Of couse, that's just me. He might be willing to do it for the extra $100 bucks.

WE have Metal Shredders in West Carolton,Oh. Take the gas tank out and the whole truck , tractor, and car goes through. Tires, glass, engine block, axles, everything. They will take semi trucks but pay next to nothing because of the extra expense of cutting down to size. Batteries are not allowed because of lead hazard. Been up close to the whole operation as the company I worked for had a crane doing work there. Fluff is hauled to the local landfill. Pretty amazing operation. Trackhoes with shears have put many of the people who used torches out of work there.

You are not going to know anything about the tractor until it is started. If he has that high of an opinion of the tractor then he needs to dig it out and make it run.
