At the cycle dealership we had a forklift that must have been about a 3000 unit that was used to move the crates around. That was enough to lift the crated touring bikes but was small enough to maneuver in tight quarters. A forklift that was too big would have been a real pain in that small area.

Buy it. That is a very good forklift. I operated one just like for several years in a department that had about 20 of them. Nice ride, smooth controls and seldom any of them broke down.

I don稚 know what you壇 need to move that a 3500 pound lift wouldn稚 lift. Keep in mind it痴 rated to do that to full height every day. It値l probably lift double that much.

10,500 seems way high for that unit, I know local pricing varies but those seem to go for around half that in my area unless it's certified from a dealer, and even then it's still not that much.

I was looking a forklifts earlier this year, lucked out and found an older diesel 5k Nissan with larger solid tires. Was able to get it cheap because the hyd. pump was leaking into the crankcase. Resealed the pump and it's good to go, only thing I wish it had was a 3stage mast instead of a 2, lift height is only little over 11ft but works for most of what I need. Works well in the gravel outside of the shop.
Came with 6ft forks which are awesome.
It took awhile to find, but was able to get it for $1500 because of the hyd. leak.

Well they make a forklift to move shipping containers but the op said he only wanted to lift 2800 pounds. A 3500 pound lift that will probably lift 5000 or more will lift the vast majority of anything most people need to move.

I made 7 foot slip on forks for my machines. Soooo handy

I used mine today to sling a Toyota cab out of a trailer, it was a craigslist freebie that wouldn't fit on my pickup bed trailer (well it would have, but would have been a good candidate for the hauling things wrong thread). Put one 8' fork extension on and used a 2" ratchet strap through the windows. The center of weight was about five feet out from the mast and the cab is probably 600 pounds or better.

3500 is the hours on that machine.

3000 lbs. is the rated lift weight.
A 3000 lb lift is much more difficult to sell than a 5000 lb. machine.
$10,500 sure seems like a lot for that little Hyster.

We have one at work that sold for $9000+ with at least double if not triple those hours, but that was a little heavier machine (4000# IIRC).

Maybe that is a "good price" in Northern, NY. state but not such a "good price" elsewhere.

the most important factor in price is three items,,
location, location, location,,,

That is why I told the OP to shop Greensboro NC,, fork trucks there can be "a dime a dozen" because of so much closed manufacturing,,

Get one for $5K to $8K less,, spend $1K transporting it,,,

Poor memory on my part, mixing up the 15 year old ones that we sold at work with the newer one that the OP is looking at.

Thanks for all the replies, we pulled the trigger and bought it today. Probably be delivered at the end of the week or next week sometime. With the relatively low hours and overall good condition of the lift. I figured that even if it was at the upper end of its value scale, It would hopefully give me few if any problems for a while. I think that we may only put 50 hours a year or so on it at the most, so this should be the last one I buy.

These things can get pretty expensive!

...So can back surgery...Had it now for a year and a half...Zero issues. Runs like a champ and makes moving heavy things a walk in the park.

So I'm in the market for a used forklift. I know very little about them but from what I have learned, I think I'm leaning towards one with pneumatic tires so it can be used on asphalt as well as concrete. My needs I'll be minimal..probably less than 40 hrs a year of use. And the heaviest lift will be 2800 lbs. I found a 3500 hr propane Hyster 3k unit that appears to be in good condition and well maintained. It's in the 10,500 range. A little more than I want to spend but the cleanest used one I have come across in my area. Anyone have any input or personal experience ....what to look for and what to avoid ?

Depending on your local laws and regulations AND/OR if you have a business AND/OR employees you must get lifting devices inspected and certified at regular intervals.

Go to your local fork lift shop and buy a used certified lift. Surprisingly it isn't more expensive than buying from anonymous sellers and your a$$ isn't the only one on the firing line if something goes wrong and someone gets hurt.
