I have been looking at buying a 2605 38hp 2WD, weighs about 4,100 lbs. I am not looking at 4wd or loader. My main use will be tillage work, but a close second will be pulling heavy red oaks,20- 30 in in diameter, to 36 diamter, rare ones as big as 48 diameter. These logs will range in lengths from 8ft-30ft depending on the diameter of the log. They are heavy. I would cut them to reasonable lengths for the tractor, but if anyone knows if the 2605 has the lug power to pull these logs, experience would be appreciated. The next size up I was looking at was the 2625, it weighs about 5,200 lbs, and has 63 hp. I believe it also has diff lock. It also costs about $7,000-$9,000 more dollars though. I have also been considering the Massey Ferguson 2650HD it has 74 hp, but the hydraulic capacity isn't as high as the 2625, the weight is about the same though. The price I believe is about the same too, not a lot of info on the 2625 price, and 2650hd price. I desire manual trany.. I am almost sure, the 2605 can handle the logs. If it won't pull 16ft 30 in diameter logs, I will cut them to 8ft 30 in diameter. The majority of them are in the 20 in range, up to 40ft about max, but some are 30 in, and bigger, but I wouldn't expect it to pull a 30ft 30 in diameter red oak log, if it could, good, that is great, but not needed.

Well, Shannon, doesn't look like anyone seems to have any imput on your questions... Been trying to figureout if 4wd is really any benifit , or only in some cases that don't seem to apply to me..

I'll give some insight.

I would upgrade from the 2605 myself. I would also get 4wd, for tillage and pulling power, it's pretty tough to beat an extra set of tires pulling for you. It's an added cost, but it will make the tractor perform better and give it better resale.

I know a properly ballasted 2wd will out pull am improperly ballasted 4wd, but you're still at a disadvantage. And, weights wont help you get unstuck.

As for tractor, the 2650hd would be my first choice. It's a quiter tractor, Perkins engine, better 3pt, open operator's platform and better ground clearance. It also has a heavier price tag. well worth it in my opinion.

Second would be a 2615. It's just a little nicer than the 2605. Diff lock should be a must for what you are doing, therefore this would be as small as I would go.

I appreciate your imput, no one else has really responded to my questions about this. This would be my first tractor, but not my first rodeo if you know what I mean. How would you ballast a 2605 4wd properly ? One of the main reasons I believe the 2605 would be the choice for me is, that look at the TE20, the little grey fergie, or the MF 130-135-165 tractors. They are still around being worked to this very day, and have performed basically every need a small farmer needs, as is what I basically am. The TE20 though a light weight pulled it's own, and performed a lot of tasks, I believe I would put the 2605 to use doing. The Design is very similar between the TE20, and the 2605. I like the 2650 HD 2WD quite a bit, but the lowest price I forsee me getting one for is about $22,000.00, and that would be considered a fair price to me, if I could get one for that price. I wouldn't pay much more than that, but right now that is a bit for me to pay. I also am considering some kind of haul trailer for it, utility or equipment. I also need a good plow, rotary cutter, rotary tiller, manuare spreader, and some other things, and I am looking for a machine to harvest wheat. I found some mini combines, and a real old pull behind Allis Chamber wheat harvester, that would need reconditioning for my future operation of raising wheat. I have been looking at Kuhn plows the roll over type, I don't know exactly how big a Master 102 2 bottom plow will be, and if a 2605 would handle it effectively. I haven't been able to find any good quality plows on par with Kuhn for a 2605 tractor. I am looking for a new plow. If you know of any good new plows, besides like King Kutter, I'd appreciate it. Yes the Red Oaks are pretty heavy, and that is probably the heaviest thing I will need to lug around, from time to time, but my primary use will be tillage work, etc.. I am almost certain I can get by with the 2605 2wd, I have looked at the 4wd model, but I'm just not sure of it would be satisfactory compared to the 2wd model. I have seen the 2wd models go places a 4wd can with this design of tractor. I haven't noticed any real advantage to the 4wd. I would like to be able to operate both under the conditions I plan on using them, to see the difference. I do wish the 2605 had rear differential lock. The 2615 just doesn't look to me as good as the 2605. It doesn't seem as well as balanced as the 2605. That is one of the reasons I was looking at the 2625, it weighs about 1000lbs more than the 2605, has almost twice the hp, and pto ratings, high hydraulic lift capacity, and has differential lock. I know there were some issues with some leaks according to some of the blogs on here, but they may have gotten that stratened out for 2011 model. I do like the 2650hd though, I just believe it may a little high priced,in light of all the other things I am going to need along with the tractor. I am not interested in a $30,000.00 dollar loan, I'll need to finance over so many years. I don't want to go in debt, or you know what I mean. I can afford it, but I don't believe it would be wise.. Bills come from no where it seems some times.. I had planned on getting maybe the tractor, maybe the trailer, a plow, and tiller. Pay that off, then get the other things. Or at least pay most of it off, before I go get the other things. The 0% intrest is very appealing. I would try to pay it off asap. Do you know how much insurance is for good coverage for a tractor, etc..? thanks again

Shannon,
Have you considered a Massey 240? I have seen many on these units in MINT conditon for under $8000. My opinion one of the best utility tractors ever built. Has almost the exact specs of the 2605 with a proven tract record of going 3000-4000 hrs. I did a fair amount of research on the 2605 and decided to skip it due to the problems being reported.

This is a unit close to me. Its a little high due to the loader and very low hours but gives you an idea.

What problems did you find out about the 2605 being reported. I haven't heard of any problems, except the pto knob breaking..other than that, I haven't heard of anything..

Look in the reviews section of TBN, there are a few.

My local Massey/ Kubota dealer told me that he stopped selling some of the 2600 line because of brake and transmission problems.
I think I read on TBN that Massey is changing the line of utility tractors. I don't remember what the deal was I think it included a shuttle. You may want to do a search.

Massey Ferguson 2605 4x4 Diesel This unit has been on my local C list for several weeks. Why so long?

IMHO if I wanted a Massey I would look at some of the older models. 240, 243, great tractors.

Sorry I can't help you more.

Good Luck, Bill

Bill,
Thanks for the reply. Do you or anyone else know what kind of transmission problems exist?

Or wait until the fall release of the new line up. It will fill a whole in the line up that is needed. Best part is, Japan built, and not India built like the light duty 2600 series.

Well said. Nothing worse than under buying, and needed to trade up. Follow this advice.

Bill,
I checked that post out. There is nothing in it about a 2605?

Sorry about that wrong post. I was on my way out the door and I remembered that thread. I thought it included 2605s.
Most modern tractors have wet brakes. 2605 still use dry brakes. I have heard complaints about the wet brakes in the 2615 too. I don't know what part of the globe your on, but here on the mountain good brakes are a must.
I think the advice about 4WD is a good one. Other than the price, there is nothing that a 2WD does better than a 4WD. With 4WD you get four wheel braking when it's engaged. It's awfull handy if you need to back up a slope. If you ever decide you want a loader a 4WD is way ahead of 2WD, much safer.

Good hunting, Bill

My understanding of any issues with the 2600 series were at the beginning of the production run but have since been addressed. I would talk to the dealer if you were really concerned about it.

I have a new 2635 and haven't had any issues in the 60 hours I've used it this season except some alternator trouble, which I didn't notice but the techs did at the 50 hour service so they replaced it under warranty. Driveline wise, it's extremely solid. With my configuration the tractor tips the scales at 8000lbs. I routinely pull a water wagon that weighs 4-5000lbs over varied terrain, and 99% of the time in 2WD without issue. There is a hill down to the pond, so when I'm pulling out I put it in 4WD just to be on the safe side.

What type of alternator trouble did you have?

   / Looking at buying 2605 ??? #18
are you looking for new or used ? If used you might look at the 573's or anyof the 500 series tractors, they were and are still work horses. 2 or 4wd.

It just wasn't charging the battery at the proper rate. I did notice if I left the lights on at night for a while then tried cranking the engine it would be a bit slow to start, but I just chalked it up to leaving the lights on.. Once the techs did a voltage test they found it wasn't throwing out the proper voltage to keep the battery charged fully. Since it was a warranty replacement, I just stood around while the guy replaced it. Was alot easier than changing it in my car, which is a water cooled unit and required the cooling system to be taken apart :D

That is a lot of log to try to pull with a 2605.

Keep in mind that the 1604 is offered only with a non constant mesh crash box. Though rugged, this is an inconvenient transmission to use.

The 2625 is no longer being offered as the engine does not meet federal regulations.

I am currently looking at a 2635 to replace my 533 but have not yet decided.
