California, The one from Rarelectrical Website looks like would be the best deal except the cross reference numbers don't match. Like the price and will call on Monday to see if they have one like this that matches the cross ref #'s. I don't want to take a chance if the number's don't match and the starter doesn't line up correctly. The CTS 1277 that Kenmac links too, appears to be the exact match as far as cross #'s and their list of tractors, but if you look at picture top left, you'll see a black plug to the left of the brass stud (direct connect to the battery +). I don't have a plug to connect to it, just a wire with a lug connector, so would have to figure out, how to connect it. It's $80 more then Rarelectrical starter, so will check with them and see if they have one that matches like the CTS 1277 and price.
The problem with the starter has been going on for some time. I always thought it was a bad electrical connection or low battery. I always had to try several times to get it to turn the engine over until finally nothing. I took the starter out and tested the solenoid out with another new battery and the solenoid would engage and also the motor would turn. When I put it back in the tractor, I used the new battery and did a jump start directly to it, by passing the ignition. Checked the solenoid and could hear it engage, then jumped with a screw driver across the leads and the engine would turn but only for a little bit. Tried this several times with the same effect, so figured that the starter just couldn't handle the load anymore and time to get another one and quick wasting my time. I called a rebuilder here in So. Ca. and they said it would probably run around $200 (remember, here in Ca. we have to pay extra for govt pensions) to rebuild it, so forget that. If the one from Rarelectric matched on cross ref #s, I would go ahead and buy it. At least the CTS 1277 won't cost me $360 (that includes shipping).

The last starter I referenced in post #3 sells for $89 and free shipping. It references both the Yanmar number and the Hitachi number. :confused3:

I got the link I posted from Winston's post #3. The other link Winston posted also list a PH# 1-800-796-9394 .You could also call them. Like Winston said, that 1 is only $89.00.

Sorry, I saw the first part and didn't notice the second ref you gave. I called them this morning about the adaptability and he said clearance on the top may be the only problem, as it is shorter. This is a reduction gear type. It doesn't come with the plug that goes into their plug from the igination solenoid but I'll have to figure a way to connect. I can always return it if it doesn't work but have to pay return shipping. The only way to get one that looks like what came off is buy it from Hoye but four times the cost. So ordered the one for $89.00 By the way, called Rarelectric and though they don't have my on their website they can get it from their vender for $199.00 shipped and is also a reduction gear type. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks for all your help.

That gear reduction starter should really spin the engine over. I would also be interested how it all works out. I know I'll have to replace mine 1 day

Well, got the new starter from ebay. It weights about half what the original weights. Before installing, I tried the old starter one more time, using a new battery with 700 cold cranking amps ( the old battery was shot). I used jumper cables and connected the + battery directly to the starter connection and the battery ground to the bolt holding the starter to the engine. I shorted the + connection on the starter with the solenoid using a screwdriver across both points. It would turn the motor a revolution or less each try but always come to a stop as if something was dragging it down. I had charged the new battery before using it and it measured 12.+ volts across the battery terminals that would drop to 11.6 when I used the screwdriver across the starter terminals. This way I bypassed all the wiring and ignition to eliminate them from the cause. I tried the new starter with the same results except that after a few seconds it makes a rapping sound like the solenoid is disengaging and can't handle the load. If looks like the motor is bogging down after it a revolution or less and the starter just can't handle the load anymore. I was trying to think what could be causing a drag on the motor and the only thing tied to it was the alternator belt. Thinking that the alternator was frozen, I loosen the belt but that made no change. I can't believe both starters have the same problem. Got a quote of $150 to $200 to rebuild the starter. I asked them about the reduction gear starter I just bought and he says that' s the way they are going now and they are just as good as the old style. So right now, I am at a stand still. The old battery was a Costco deep cycle with only 500 cranking amps, so I should have enough cranking amps. Open to any ideas. What would drag the motor down to make the starter stop turning it?

Timing too far advanced could do that.

Just reaching way out there. Liquid on top of pistions? Are you rolling it with the compression release engaged? If it is that hard to turn over I would get a socket on the crankshaft and roll it by hand. I am not sure I am understanding, do you have battery cables hooked up or just jumper cables. If you are only using jumper cables that could be the problem. It is hard to get enough ummmfh out of jumper cable only. Not saying any of these things are your problem, just putting out there for consideration.

plus 2 on the jumper cable thing. Tough to get a good connect

Check the Battery Ground to the Chassis. ;) Also Those Price's on a Starter Rebuilt are expensive. When checking the cost Don't say Yanmar tell them it's a JD.
