You can't overwork a tractor because it is too large. However, you can wear out and break a too small tractor working it on jobs needing a larger tractor.

normally I'm get a size bigger than you think you need, +20hp.. but in a case where he has 16.5 ac treed out of 17.. a biggun might just get in the way.

For those situations.. a largish SCUT or smallish CUT can be a good first tractor, then an older cheap BIG 2wd can be added later to do the mule work..

If your intentions is to clear up some of this property then get a bigger tractor. I would suggest a 50hp tractor too.

I don't bleed greene but this is in your price range and I KNOW, because there is one sitting in the barn next to the Mahindra right now that I have run on and off since it was new, will do everything you seem to want to do.

27hp engine, the entire tractor except the paint is Yanmar. Good machine, no frills, old school. Drawbacks are brakes. They work, one will get tired, and as soon as you fix that, the other will go lame. Nature of the series.

Well we actually were seriously thinking about a JD 1050,4wd with loader at the local Massey dealer, except we had an independent mechanic check it out and he thought the hydraulics were slow on the loader.
It was also above our price range ($8000) but was doable.

I also have someone selling a 1973 IH 454 with loader, gas, decent enough looking in the pic for $3500.

Downside-gas,over 2 hours away to just go see it,and is pretty old.

Another couple of tractors to add into the mix...

Kubota L3010,HST,4wd,LA480 loader,2300 hours and looks well used.Needs rear tires. At the same dealer with the JD 1050,he is asking $10,000 but might be able to get him into our price range...he dropped $2000 on the JD almost straight off the bat.

Second is another 'Bota, unfortunately won't know more until later tonight.4wd,loader,is a L....something according to seller, from the 1980's.He will have more info later on.He did say it pulled a 5' cutter no problem and was basically the same hp as his other Kubota which was a L3010.
Asking $5500.

Looking used really sucked for me. I looked for six months and drove over a thousand miles. Pictures of the tractor looked great. However, when I went to look at the tractor, the pictures I was looking at weren't the pictures of the tractor I went to buy. I could not believe how someone could trash out a tractor as bad as they did when these tractors had less than a thousand hours. The rare times I did find a tractor that was in excellent condition they were priced a thousand dollars than new. I ended up buying new. I have a ten acre pasture. I would recommend a 5' brush hog. 4' would take way too much time to mow ten acres.

I know you said 7k was your price range but something to think about. I was at my Kioti dealers a couple of weeks ago and they had brand new ck30 with HST listed for $13.5k with FEL. I tried to get my wife just to go sit on it but she was wise to my plan
I have a 22hp tractor and we have about 8 acres of pasture that we maintain and mow with it. It gets the job done but it would be nice to have a 30hp so I could go to a bigger mower. currently we have a 4' finish mower and a 5' bush hog. The 5' is a little big for it but it is okay if you go slow.
