My GC2310 suddenly lost all hydraulics and drive. No FEL, no backhoe, PS.. I was able to limp it into a serviceable location/position because it was in 4WD. Once I took it out of 4WD I had no forward or reverse and have been unable to put it back into 4WD. I thought these only had one hydraulic pump so I took the Shimadzu gear pump out and did find the shaft was worn. So I continued to split the transmission housing by first removing the HST and the transmission cover. None of the other gears or splines seemed to be worn. When I turned the input shaft before disassembly I was able to see/hear the gears turning all the way Shimadzu pump. If I stuck a screwdriver in the pump gears to jam them I could still turn the input shaft and feel a slipping which I assumed was the pump shaft and gear slipping. From reading a lot of post here on this site I am starting to think I may have more than one issue than the hydraulic pump and gear. My questions are: 1) does the tractor need the Shimadzu pump operational for the HST to operate? 2) I have read post about a ball bearing being found in the transmission housing upon removal. I didn't see one in mine. 3) What does one use to seal up the transmission cover upon reinstall? I have heard RTV is a no no. Thoughts?

No RTV, OEM or made up gaskets only. You get RTV in the pump or valves, bad things happen.

Most hydrostatic transmission have a charge pump to feed them which could well be the pump you are working with.

"When I turned the input shaft before disassembly I was able to see/hear the gears turning all the way Shimadzu pump. If I stuck a screwdriver in the pump gears to jam them I could still turn the input shaft and feel a slipping which I assumed was the pump shaft and gear slipping."

It the pump gears don't move with the input shaft being turned I would expect that either a press fit has loosened or on a keyed drive a key has sheared.

Either way you need a good service and a good parts manual.

Aside from the ones that failed when they were under warranty, we have had a couple of members go through this and repair it. Sounds like you may have read the threads.

It's been a while since it's happened. But, I believe the verdict was that there are two hydraulic pumps. The internal one operates the HST, the external one operates the rest.

I think the tractors able to be moved, but that was it.

I would appreciate it, if you keep us up on how this goes, and what it takes to get it repaired.

Good luck with your repair.

Is it an optical illusion? The splined shaft appears to be worn. The spline start off square at the base of the shaft and appear to turn into triangular splines.

Good catch, yes the splines are shot, what is the drive gear like?

The pump and the gear are both replaced when this happens.

Supposedly, the pump shaft doesn't engage into the gear deep enough.

It's a factory defect MF only took responsibility for, if you were lucky enough to have it happen under warranty.

Out of warranty, they were offering a deal where they supplied the parts, if you paid the dealer for the huge labor bill.

I haven't heard of any of these in a long time, that weren't done completely by the owner. So, I don't know what MF would do at this point, but I would bet on nothing.

The last guy who did his own, (he was a mechanic), said, it was time consuming, but not particularly difficult.

Just a follow up today. I did download a service manual as was suggested. i have attached a screen shot of the hydraulic flow. it pretty much confirms that without the hydraulic pump pressure you do not have any drive to the HST. I was further able to confirm this once I got the transmission cover completely out of the tractor and followed the path from the hydraulic hoses that attach to the cover and the channels in the cover. From the hose attachment the fluid flows to the filter, from the filter it flows to the inlet hole on the HST which is at the bottom of the HST. I have attached a screen shot from the manual. I have been taking a slow pace on the repair. My observations have been the gear pump splined shaft and the drive gear were both worn. I have 1100 hours on the tractor and I have worked it pretty hard (moved over 1000 yards of dirt and composted manure for a lawn expansion in 2021). I should mention that I gave it to my son in 2022 when I retired and sold our home. To my disappointment he has refused to keep it under cover. As a result the transmission filled with water. It was a coffee milkshake color when I drained the tranny. The gear pump showed signs of rust when I removed it as it sits at the top of the case and was immersed in water while it sat this winter. My hope is he will at least keep a tarp over it or get a canvas (Storage Logic?) shed to park it under. Also, there is some sort of sealant used on the case cover. It is gray in color and very soft and pliable like RTV sealant on the inside and hardened on the exterior. Any thoughts? I am nervous about using RTV, I am leaning towards using a gasket shellac like Indian Head on both surfaces and then mating the two together. i may be doing that today.
