Loved Ones - Toyota

I am a Master Certified Toyota Technician working at a dealer in central NC and am up to my ears in gas pedal recalls. Actually Toyota calls them Service Campaigns - not recalls, that's what the news calls them. There are two different types of gas pedals involved, both are electronic sensors that send a signal to a computer which sends a signal to a motor on the throttle of your engine. If you where to experience a "stuck" pedal, I seriously doubt pulling up on it would help unless it was actually jammed on something. We have been shortening both types of pedals on Camrys and shimming them on all others. There is also an ECM recalibration on the Camry Non-hybrid models. I am told it will cut power to the engine if gas and brake are requested at the same time, but am unsure exactly. My advise to people is drive your car. A very small amount of cars have experienced problems and if you have no signs of abnormal operation, then it will likely not magically start happening now. To be safe, call your local dealer and make an appointment to have the campaign performed. I did try to shut down a smart-key car the other day and it will not turn off in neutral or drive while moving. My advise is shift to neutral and coast to the side of the road. The engine has a rev limiter to keep it from damaging itself, but worst case, let her blow. It's only a car. I am sure Toyota would give you a new one and then some if that actually happened. BTW anyone remember the Explorers in ditches 10 years ago? It's not even that bad! We will survive. Toyota is a GREAT manufacturer and will fix all these vehicles as soon as possible.;)

So how would you fix this one :D

With all due respect I don't see this as an issue about how much any individuals or groups of individuals LOVE their Toyotas. Toyota has made an above average product for many years and has an excellent record in longiviety and service. Toyota's I've owned were great and I'll probably by another, too.

Seems to me that the whole issue is really about Toyota's handling of the problem. First, for a long time, it was blamed on a misfitting floor mat. That seemed to be really unlikely as the problem kept persisting and now finally Toyota is forced to admit it's got a design flaw with a part that can and has failed and caused injuries and deaths.

That seems to be awfully hard for some people to admit. Now, to defend Toyota's handling would be one thing but just trying to dismiss any criticism of Toyota by emphatically stating how much one loves their Toyota is just comical. :D It's comical :D how so many want to dismiss this with a story about how much they love their Toyota and how they would buy another as if admitting that Toyota has made a mistake would somehow be a negative reflection on them personally.

It's just comical.:D

Funny Youtube. Not much time to call 911 though. Just a note, I did try driving a Camry today WOT and pressing the brake after the ECM reflash. Car almost immediately slows down but it was hard for me to tell exactly why. At first I was told it would cut fuel, but it did not feel like it to me. Engine RPM was still pulling at car, but it had no torque. The second the brake was released, you were back to normal WOT - no lag. Maybe VVTi severely retarding timing -????? I'm not a designer or exec, I just fix'em when they say fix'em. Another note: CTS and Denso pedals are being shortened, CTS pedals being shimmed, carpet padding being modified, stopper block being installed under pedals, ECM being reflashed, floor mats being secured with clips and unauthorized mats being taken out of vehicles. Which one made the gas pedal stick?

Ron,
Do you know if the '07 Tundra ever had anything except the mat issue?

I have done several recalls on Tundras. They have the CTS pedal and require a shim, but do not require pedal to be cut or carpet altered. I am not exactly sure if 07 qualifies, but can check on Monday. It is definitely the body style being recalled, but may not fall into the VIN range because it was the first year of that style. Otherwise your local dealer should know. It likely does, but the good news is it is pretty quick and painless. You may be able to wait if the dealer is not too packed. I can do one in about 15 minutes "hands on time".

Via a PM I was requested to clarify the 'silent recall". Well nowadays they call it a service campaign. This happens when there is a known defect, with an assumed limited number of vehicles involved. Since there isn't a broad based saftey issue the NTSB doesn't generally get involved.

We had issues where gas tanks and or filler necks rotted out on reasonably young vehicles creating a fire hazard. It seemed to be in certain runs of manufacture. When they showed up, we'd fix them free of charge, but no customers were notified.

We also had a car that was half Japanese and half Rover..These things came in on the hook daily due to massive electrical failures due to the British-"Lucas, the prince of darkness" electronics. These cars would shut down any time , any where and sometimes just burn up due to massive electronic malfunctions...This car was serious money. Again, no recall.

Over the last 10 years or so, the feds have gotten more observant of this kind of behavior and tolerate it less.

Remember, many of the import companies began to take over market share in the early 80's where many domestics had lost their way and the media didn't and still doesn't help. Example: "Dateline" having to use a missle to blow up a mid-70's Chevy P/U because as hard as they tried, they couldn't do it under any normal circumstances.

The imports make some fine vehicles, no question. However, these cars have problems like all others, sometimes the owners are so convinced that these vehicles are bulletproof that any aboration is seen as just that. In terms of a domestic, most assume the same problem is an indication of junk.

How many Volvo owners spend $2000.00 per year to keep them on the road, yet sing praises as to how wonderful the car is...I work with people who think this normal. If it were a Ford of Chevy the'd be screaming about what a piece of junk they own..Make sense?...No./

To be a little shorter, notice that Toyota buried gas pedal issue, now they are getting religion and recalling the Prius (sp?) due to other known problems. Honda is doing the same.

If GM would have done anything close to this, it would have been an international scandal 2 weeks after it was first discovered, not 2 years later.
Remember Ralph Nader?

I believe that the media, especially one publication, that shall remain unnamed, have given unfair publicity to imports and every unfair trashing of domestics.

Example: I was looking over thir magazine in a waiting room.
Looked up my 04 GMC Z71..They said it was pretty good (surprise)...Then I looked up the 04 Chevy Z71...The trashed it as junk...It's the SAME truck.

On the take, or just stupid..Don't know, but I do have my suspicions.

Can i say speed sensors in the wheel bearings of their pickups? The way premature failure causing significant degradation in braking power. GM repeatedly denied knowing of a problem in spite of thousands of NHTSA complaints forwarded to them. They did a silent recall and still denied there was a problem. They continued making these for many years. Then, they started admitting the problem existed in one state but if you were across the border in another state you were not. I remember laughing when they said Canada had special salt. I also loved reading their denials of a problem in the news year after year, saying they had not received significant complaints in spite of the numerous customer complaints, federal complaints, and their own previous news interviews where they were asked about the problem.

Yep, GM would never do this.
