lowe's wrong chain saw in box

I thought I purchased a Craftman s205 chainsaw , but when I got home there was a troy built chainsaw in the box. also it had a damaged primer bulb. I took the troybuilt saw back to lowe's in the craftsman box I recieved it in along with the receipt. The manager looked up the troybuilt model # said the troybuilt saw was a home depot exclusive , and that no way did that saw come in that box from this store. I asked them to check another box. they brought one to the counter. unsnapped the case looked inside the closed the case quickly then told me they would not take back the saw. they didnt let me look inside the case. also the they said the saw I had fuel and oil residue in it, they said they cannot take back power equipment with fuel or oil residue . do new saws get tested before shipping? if so a saw new in the box that had been tested would not be returnable ? Anyway that was my only bad experience with lowes. not sure I will shop there again though
This is just one of many reasons that I stop buying from Lowes years ago... Can't stand them

I think somebody purchased a new Craftsman saw, put their old Troybilt saw in the case and then returned it and somebody wasn't paying attention and it ended back on the shelf and you unfortunately purchased it. And also most stores will not let you return products that gas has been put into. Has to do with state and federal fire codes.
totally agree. You got victimized by some miscreant who bought a new saw and then shoved his old crappy saw in the box and returned it. Nobody bothered to look at the return and they just restocked it for another sale. Unfortunately for you, they thought that *you* were the miscreant in this case. (How would they know, really?)

The store got scammed by the previous customer (sad case today). Be adamant about the issue and if no satisfaction, hopefully you used a credit card for purchase and plead your case to them.

Good luck and helpfully a lesson learned by all.

there was a thread on here about Walmart auto parts (filters in particular) being returned with used equipment in the box for other unsuspecting customers to buy. Any short read of how things got in the 1930s leads to the phrase, "desperate times lead to desperate measures".

I think this is probably what happened as well.
Most times they ask if anything is wrong with it.
If the reply in No., “I Figure” (guess) it just goes back on the shelf.
And it’s sad we as customers have to deal with the consequences.

Someone bought one at Home Depot didn't like it ,bought one from lowes put the one from home Depot in the box and passed it off on Lowes. don't buy anything from Lowes they are no good in my area they would not take back $10 worth of screws after I had just spent $3,000 there , now I only buy mark downs and only if no other place is open.

Go back to the store, calmly explain the situation and ask for a manager. They will make this right, don't leave until they do. Keep your cool, take a deep breath, stay calm.
I have never had a Lowes not make things right when I finally spoke to a manager about it. That said, today I am taking back a faucet I purchased online a little over 2 months ago. The box is a little warped because it was delivered and left out in the rain instead of being put under the porch to stay dry. I'm sure I will have to speak to a manager because of how long it's been, but I am pretty sure they will take it back. Give them a chance. Like JJT says, keep your cool and be calm. I'd like to add, be firm. Just let them know that you're not going to accept this loss.

Thinking Back… several 4-5 years now.
I had a similar situation at Walmart.
I bought windshield wipers. Rainex to be exact.
Put 1 side on and when I opened the second it was a new wiper but not the “RAINEX” completely different.
And I figure it was a return that somebody swapped a higher priced unit and substituted a cheaper then returned.
And sadly the folks they have at the return desk can’t detect all the different kinds of flavors of ALL the vast array products in the whole store.
Same at all big stores.
And what’s really bad I may buy something and this is online too.
Like at sleezebay get it and not even open it for months.
I found something in behind truck seat I bought last year and not even opened it.
And that could be bad when you get a flim flam. Switcheroo.
I’ll buy something on sale not really needing it cause I got so much already, but it’s not going to get any cheaper mentality. And there you go.

You definitely need to go back again to Lowes with your Saw and try again. Be calm, be polite and demand to see the manager if need be. Do not leave until you get your money back or the correct saw.

You're not the criminal, so you need to stand your ground and get what you deserve. You shouldn't be paying the price the the incompetence of Lowes return staff.

If it were me, I wouldn't have left until I got what I wanted/deserved, im not easily swayed when I know I'm right.

I once bought a new riding mower (John Deere) from Home Depot. loaded it on my trailer with the help of HD staff, secured it properly. Got home and the front deck hanger had snapped off, it was made of cheap pot metal. I didn't even take it off the trailer, I got back in the truck and took it back to HD. The manager argued with me for over 30 minutes that I must have damaged it putting it on or taking it off the trailer (nope). In the end they took it back and I got my $ back. No way was I paying for a riding mower that would break before it was even used.
