Double what beenthere said. You need to pull off the flywheel and inspect the key.

Typically the key is made of aluminum and is intended to sheer rather than destroy the the crankshaft or flywheel key ways. So if as in this case, you are chasing a not starting situation, it is important to make sure that the flywheel is in correct position to the crank.

I've seen this issue with a lot of push type lawn mowers that suddenly stop running and woun't start. Pull the flywheel and find that the key itself is sheered and the flywheel is no longer in the correct rotational location in respect to the crank.

Well just today I finally got the engine back in the chassis and hooked up. Cranks like crazy-only problem-won't run. Plenty of spark, pulled plug and decent compression. dumped gas in carb and it would sputter then backfire with a bang. Did that a couple of times. And before the backfire, it would puff white smoke. Given fact when it crapped out, it backfired with a bang, and given everyones comments that I had to pull flywheel, I guess that is what I finally should do.

I guess you would all say now for sure this thing is out of time.
