Can't do much for $50, but I have "reworked" the tachometer on my "I-talian" motor bike. Spent some time with the input driven by the lathe after confirming spindle RPM with a rpm-o-meter ;-)
Those little eddy current cups inside need to balance the pointer against a light spring. some what fiddly, everything needs to be clean and lubed.
$50 is not bad for a new one unless you enjoy the work (I do ;-)
