Lubricating proof meter cable?

Can't do much for $50, but I have "reworked" the tachometer on my "I-talian" motor bike. Spent some time with the input driven by the lathe after confirming spindle RPM with a rpm-o-meter ;-)

Those little eddy current cups inside need to balance the pointer against a light spring. some what fiddly, everything needs to be clean and lubed.

$50 is not bad for a new one unless you enjoy the work (I do ;-)

if you can get all those hours in in 6 months you might be ok. because that's about the lifespan of some of the new proofmeters!

It's a conspiracy by the used equipment dealers to destroy all indication of actual use and condition of anything they try to pedal on the unaware.

I hear Krylon and Rust-O-leum are in on it too!

So is there any one part of the new meters that is more succeptable to failure, and that a little extra maintenance could prevent it, or is it just the whole thing in general?

Well I have an update on the meter and cable installation. I haven't had much seat time since the install 8.3 hours to be exact according to the meter. That's all it took to twist this cable in two. The meter is still good and turns freely. Below is a picture of how well the cable handled those few hours. What a joke, I wish I remembered what brand the cable was.
