Lubrication of the main lifting bolts

i also think it should rotate on the bolt and the ball is used for misalignment. i think a good winter project will be to drill and tap the bolts for zerk fittings /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

well i guess im not smart enough in the area of these ball joints yet but it seems as if there are three ideas working here 1 where the ball doesnt need to rotate around the joint but just the bolt 2 where both the ball joint moves and the sleeve moves on the bolt and 3 where the ball joint only moves and the sleeve is stationary on the bolt so now im totally confused and not sure of what is correct is there a site anywhere that will have the definative and correct answer i dont mind admiting im ignorant on this issue but i really would like the correct answer ........... i do appreciate all the info though guys i just want my pt to be around many many years before i have to worry about fixing something i could have prevented

I think we are going to have to agree to disagree, as you mentioned there are three solutions. I'm sure all of us will, however, agree that is has to be lubricated well, no matter which solution we use. That will be the key to longevity. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

ok now ... lets have a show of hands for who is shimming and who isnt shimming the bolts my hand is now up for the shimming ...since i ran out and shimmed mine from the other couple of guys post i thought it might be correctas im not sure of what alignment has to do with the ball joints ... but like i said im ignorant on this issue

I will have to raise my hand to the NO shimming. Just keep the bolts tight enough to keep them from rotating in the outside mounts. I wonder if 14 is leaving them loose as he says he rotates when he lubes them. Anyway my vote is for NO shimming.

Mine are shimmed and staying shimmed. I called PT the other day for a shipping quote on some new attachments. As I said before I spoke with Terry about the joints. He told me the center ball should be stationary but it doesn't make much difference if it isn't. Terry was my maintenance trainer and told me to use Super Lube on the ball mostly to stop squeaks. (knowing what I know now I would like to do that again) Before I shimmed the ball joints the machine made all kinds of weird noises when I curled the bucket with a heavy load, the noise would stop for a while if I sprayed Super Lube on the joints.. Since I have shimmed and lube with 14's mixture the noises are gone. I am trying to determine what type of steel the ball is made of. If it is some type of low carbon steel it may not be easy to drill and tap. I am confused about the link ends myself but rotating around a stationary ball that you can lube properly makes more sense to me.

Who ever started that shimming business should be ashamed, you are making others question their common sense.
If you are going to shim those lifting joints, why not go ahead and shim all six joints on each of the cylinders also.

I have one of the early 90's 1445, and have never used shims. On all the millions of 3ph units, I'll bet no one uses shims to keep the bolt or pin tight. A good lube on a regular basis, is all that is required.

THOSE JOINTS ARE SUPPOSED TO MOVE STRICTLY FOR ALIGNING THE BOLT OR PIN TO THE IMPLEMENT. IT IS A PART TIME BEARING, IN THAT IT NEVER SPINS IN THE SOCKET, ONLY MOVING AROUND THE SHAFT. PROBABLY 180 DEGREES.

LUBE, LUBE, LUBE AND NO SHIMMING. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To all those that uses shims, good luck.

I stand by all that I have said. Thank You.

So are you saying you are not going to shim? Just kidding! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
