Lubricity of diesel

Yeah, don't worry, if he adds some biodiesel fatty acid methyl esters to try to increase the lubricity some, we can use the polymerase chain reaction to detect what genetically modified soybean DNA was used from Cargill, Monsanto, DeKalb Genetics, etc. too, down to 1 femtogram of soya DNA!

And all we need is a 5 microliter sample! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

( Sounds great, do you want the results in nanograms, picograms, or femtograms? )

Since we buy fuel in gallons which is a lot closer to kilograms, wouldn't that give much better results? The identity of a billionth of a gram of fuel in a 10 gallon, mixed sample is not really conclusive as to the identity of the whole tank of fuel, is it?

The original claim was that a lab could identify the brand of fuel and the tank it came from. That is the result I'd like to see.

One gallon (3.8 liters) of diesel fuel weighs around 8 pounds, that is about 3.5 kilograms, one gram being 1/28th of an ounce.

We are not talking about the identity of one billionth of a gram, we are talking about the identiry of one trillionth of a gram. That is what you use to measure the identity of the petrochemical sample, not kilograms......you apparently don't have any clue about what you are talking about?

All you need to supply the lab with is one milliliter, since all they will need is about one tenth of that.

One trillionth of a gram does not tell me who produced or where the entire contents of the tank came from, therefore establishing the liability of the fuel supplier.

Does the original claim still stand? Who supplied; what tank?

/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif LOL, one trillionth of gram does not tell you anything because you don't know anything about what you are attempting to discuss here, but it tells the petroleum organic chemist everything he needs to know! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Ah, had a little accident this morning fueling my tractor to clear snow. In spilling a bit, I splashed some that ended up in my mouth. I'm quite certain I ate a gram or two. Does that make me well lubricated? For the record, the "bio-diesel" my co-op delivered tastes the same as what I remember regular ole diesel to taste like. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

In the cold, I wiped my nose (and had diesel on my hand) and now I can't get rid of the darn diesel smell. It's on the end of my nose! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Dont get me wrong, I'm not a chemist by any means. As a matter of fact, Pup lost me a while ago on the technical jargon /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. My point is that it can be done. If they can carbon date, anything to the exact year it existed and convict a guy of a murder he commited 50yrs ago from a flake of skin under his victims fingernail, /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif this would no doubt be a piece of cake for anyone who has the knowledge and equipment. I would never question it.

If you are talking about warantable items on a tractor(thats where this started by the way) it would in the MFG's best interest to run such a test. Millions of dollars per year are wasted because the customer tore something up and blamed it on the product.

I think its an iteresting discussion, none the less.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Your wife will love you, the smell of a little fresh diesel cologne is the mark of a real man.

May I suggest a couple of drops of 2-ethylhexyl nitrate on the nose to increase the cetane level and the love potential too! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just don't start huffing it. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

OK, you're winning me over.

Where do I send my sample?

First contact a freight shipping company to come and transport your 30 gallons of hazardous flammable material that you've concoccted and are planning to ship, then contact an ASTM certified organic petrochemical analytical laboratory and tell them all the variety of tests you want to pay for.

A good Wall Street Investment Bank that specializes in international petrochemical futures might be a good resource for your quest too, they particularly don't like their $10 billion supertankers to be transporting sour crudes when they paid up front for sweet crudes..... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
