Tractor
Kubota L3130HST w/LA723 loader
I spotted a M4500 beside the road with a for sale sign this afternoon. I could not tell if it was 2 or 4wd. Anybody know anything about these. I had the thought it might be useful for heavy shredding work and save my Grand L.

The M4500 is no slouch and is built with the same care as the rest of the family of Kubota products.

The M4500DT is 4wd, while the M4500F amd M4500OC are 2wd. All three have 16Rx4R transmissions and 48hp at the pto.

What faults if any did the M4500DT have? Anything in particular to look for or ask about when examining this model? Any guess as to a fair price for a 4500DT with about 1800 hrs. and a QT loader? I think the guy is asking around $11.5 for it right now. Thanks.

The M4500 is a strong and durable machine with no weak spots except that relatively few of them were sold in the U.S. so knowledgeable support is a little scarce. It's around 30 years old - so value depends completely on what kind of life it has had. Check for clean oil, no smoking, no knocking in the engine, fully functioning pto, strong 3-point hitch, intact air filters, smooth clutch, quiet transmission, no oil leaks - clean and dry front axle if 4wd. Drive it up and down some grades listening for gear noise or popping out under load (or going downhill) - check it out thoroughly. If a major repair is lurking it may be very spendy. Is it being sold by a long-time owner? If so they can tell you all about it's history - ask how it handles the biggest implement they have for it. And ask the reason why they are selling it. If all the major stuff seems ok then age alone is not a deal breaker and the price may be ok. A new tractor of comparable strength and weight would cost 2 or 3 times as much.
