Sorry about the double post. I took the alternator off and had it tested. It was only putting out about 10v. I bought it about 4 months ago from Pat's Small Engine Plus, so it is still under warranty. Is there a chance my tractor eats alternators or is this just bad luck? I've ordered a replacement...hope this doesn't happen again.

Most alts aren't tolerant of reverse polarity.. or output shorts. As long as you havn't tried to jump it off incorrectly.. and/or don't have any shorts on the output.. you are likely ok... Alts aren't great for charging dead batteries either.. it's hard on them.. a dead battery should be charged a bit before you even jump it.. that way the alt is working full tilt for extended periods of time carrying all the electrical loads AND recharging a severly discharged battery..
