Just so I don't confuse or mislead anyone, you have to clutch to change gears, you can just use the "hand clutch" or foot clutch. I don't even know if one is recommended over the other.

I use the hand clutch when I need my right foot on or ready to use the brakes such as on slopes or making a sharp, slow turn to avoid a tree, building etc. or when using the foot throttle.

All other times I use the foot clutch.

Ok thanks guys that's about what had pictured. I was thinking the hydro shuttle may be an advantage using a loader, or in 20 years from now when my knees are tired! I wonder if they are as reliable as a good ole conventional stnd shift tranny?

They are very nice doing loader work. My son and I mucked out an old pond last fall. I was using our L5030 and he was on the M8540 and he was taking more buckets out than I and the same thing when we were doing dirt work on a shooting range.

Now in all fairness to me, he had Ag's to my Industrials...

I have no trouble using the M8540 for loader work, but I do spin the tires a bit more than with an HST which isn't a problem; maybe it's the 35 extra HP and not the transmission type.

The hydro is a wet clutch setup and I am sure long term reliability is good.

Yes, my left leg is partially paralyzed and I have to use my right foot on the foot clutch, so sometimes I use the Hydraulic Shuttle Shift to change gears instead of the foot clutch. You simply put the lever in the middle of its arc which activates the clutch. I rode motorcycles most of my life and "clutching" with my hand is not awkward and is as fast as using the foot clutch.

For most people though I doubt there is any advantage to doing it this way, but perhaps I misunderstood your question.

No you answered it thanks!!If I got it right you still either have to put in the middle or push the clutch in I was just wondering,I thought it was that way. One more ? When your taking off with the hyd.shuttle do you just simply push the lever up(not using the foot clutch)say when you are using your big shredder?

Yep, that is the way I do it. There are probably others who prefer the foot clutch, but that seem redundant to me. I like that you can use it to stop for a minute and grab a drink, snap a picture, stretch etc. and not have to take it out of gear like you would using the foot clutch.

I don't know whether it is the wet pack clutch or what, but the engagement of the clutch by using the hand lever or foot are exactly the same. I originally thought maybe I could vary engagement easier with the foot clutch as opposed to the hand lever, but they both do the same.

So it is ok to just place the hand lever in the mid position and leave the transmission in gear 5 minutes I believe on a std manual tranny if you held in the clutch for 5 minute the throw out bearing & clutch fork (contact points) would wear faster. Hope my question is some what clear ??

I let mine run while in gear and the shuttle in neutral and no issues at all. Never really thought about it. Seems natural. Not done it for extended periods but just working around. I have a M7040 with the hydro shuttle. What a great tractor. I think its going to become a "classic".
