Two points:

Most Service jobs (Electrician, plumber, etc.) are export proof.

I'm a software engineer so my entire type of job is in the process of
being outsourced however it does slow down. India is now almost as
expensive as the US for SE's since wages over there went way up

Even China's labor costs (for professionals/skilled labor) are increasing. However, as in the US, manufacturers try to dumb down the job as much as possible, to reduce skilled labor costs.
What we have to watch, and ensure our elected boys and girls react to, is subsidized labor and manufacturing costs. This includes any foreign product...

As far as goods goes if the cost of fuel keeps going up transporting all that stuff here on ships is going to become a bigger and bigger piece of the pie until it precludes companies importing stuff. Why do you think Toyota, etc. have domestic manufacturing plants even considering the higher cost of American labor? It's not just to say they are made in the USA, it's to save $$ in shipping costs.

I saw on the Discovery Channel last year a show on containerized shipping, and the process has become so efficient that shipping from China and elsewhere on most items is 1/2 of 1% of the final cost of the item. Case in point, I needed to buy a new smoke detector for my Mom's house. DOH's (Lowe's - Let's botch something together) had a bare bones Kidde smoke detector for $5. The components were made in the USA and/or Mexico, shipped to China for assembly and then shipped back to the USA. I just get a warm fuzzy knowing that a life safety device sells for all of $5, and is assembled by a country with a track record of falsifying quality control documents.

Maybe on site service jobs such as plumber and electrician are export proof; but a service based economy is an unbalanced one to put it politely. A balanced economy needs service jobs, manufacturing, blue collar, white collar, etc to be healthy.

BTW, I just received my third Motorola Razor cell phone today under warranty as the second phone I received under warranty to replace the original Chinese made dud was a POS too. Oh, and I got a new memory chip to boot since the chip was defective. This is the third Razor in three months when my previous Motorola analog phone lasted 9-years. When this Chinese piece of crap dies at the end of my two year commitment to it...I will run over it with Bambi.

Edward Deming...in fact, the Japanese named their most pretegious Quality Award after Deming.
He was a no nonsense, no BS quality professional and one of my heroes.

Amen, very well put.

The other factor in all this, don't be fooled by china not making high quality. At this point of the game they are one of the very few in the world that can produce high numbers and maintain high quality. That probally explains why they are manufacturers to the world. They have achived this level not by luck but hard work and willing to take on work others would not touch. You get what you pay for, if John Deere is making stuff overseas I imagine a company like John Deere can afford the best QC (quality control) John Deere probally has workers living down in China to over see the production runs.

At then end of the day it's the year 2007 it really does not matter anymore where stuff is made. As long as QC is in check the end product should meet the demands of the consumer.

Sorry to disagree but the reason manufacturers are going to china is low cost/slave labor and non-existent environmental and safety laws. You can believe what you want but the bottom line is it just plain wrong for us to give away all the gains earned by our forefathers so a very few can profit of this.

Turbo36 have you been to china to visit the manufacturing plants?

I have and I can assure you the factories I visited are hardly slave driven. They are pretty high tech and workers seem happy. Another member here posted the same type of example talking about how generally the people are good and happy.

I am postive a small precentage of factories are slave driven but to suggest all of them operate in that fashion is delusional. I have also witnessed alot of USA factories running slave labour types of factories. Does that mean all the USA factories are scum? Turbo36 I can assure you China is not becoming the super power of the world for manufacturing by treating it's work force of 750 million like slaves.

You speak from the things you hear in the media, not from first hand experience. Turbo36 have you been to china to witness first hand the so call information you speak?

"Politically Correct" is running this country into the ground in my humble opinion but I understand your point about Deming.

I am currently immersed in a fraud case involving forged documents from Mainland China that were washed through Taiwan and Brazil so don't give me this crap about how honorable the country it is. It's still a communist country without free choice of religion that has a culture of backhanded deals and bribery.
I know from your past posts that you are an importer so of course you will put on your "Rose Colored Glasses" and Sing Chairman Mao's praises. Time will prove what a mistake is is too allow America's (and Canada's in the long run) middle class to singlehandedly cure all of China's ills.
What companies do you personally know of in the US that pratice slave labor?
