Lotsa luck finding USA made products.

Exporting one classic Mustang doesn't put money in the pockets of Ford and Ford workers in the current economic environment. What's the point of making thousands of cars if you don't have buyers for them?

Very true...

Although, it's nice to know Made In USA still means something in the world and some people are still willing to pay for it...

Here's a view from the other side.

I invented a product and got all the patents in order then went looking for a USA manufacturer. Man was I stunned at the prices USA manufacturers wanted to charge me, and most and I do mean most would not give me the time of day unless I was going to manufacture millions of units.

So actually the USA manufacturers left me no choice to go to China id I wanted my product to see the light of day.

WOW was I stunned at the difference in response. First of all every Chines manufacturer was thankful for the opportunity to bid on my project, unlike the USA companies who felt I was wasting their time. Second they agreed to do the molds at no charge where here in the USA they wanted 50K just for the mold ( for a untested product this was a lot of monet to me ). They Chinese company did computer CAD drawings at no charge to me, the USA companies wanted 10K fo rthe same service. The chines company wanted $4.00 for the finished product including wrapped in plastic and custom packaging. The USA company wanted $45.00 each for the product only and box etc was all above that.

Bottom line the China product was $4.00 for 500 pieces with box and graphics etc plus shipping of another 1K and duty of 10%. or under 5K

The USA company was closing in on 100K for the same thing.

Now I have people working here in the USA because of the Chinese manufacturer.

So there are two sides of this coin, if I would have stuck with the USA manufacturers the product would never have seen the light of day and 12 employees would not have the jobs they have today WITH medical benefits.

Bottom line there is no way any Country on the planet can compete with China period. China uses free prison labor to do their manufacturing and they have absolutely no pollution laws to speak of, no other laws re insurance etc.etc. etc. as other Countries do.

Listen I'm not sticking up for China made goods, but when you can buy something of have it made for 10 - 20 cents on the dollar. It just didn't feel justified spending 100K when I could spend 5K.

Most of all it also has to deal with attitude. The USA companies couldn't be bothered with my small order while the Chinese companies were glad to bend over backwards for my business.

And what is the matter with saying "we need better..." we do.

Go visit a public school and look at the day to day curriculum for the average person.
We teach algebra...they teach trig...
We teach science...they teach physics...
We teach anatomy...they teach biology...
We teach home economics...they teach business fundamentals

And I don't personally care who says so, you cannot stop learning.

I don't think there's anything wrong with better schools - But the Govt's solution to that Giant sucking sound is the same answer it's always been and I don't think their answer works. The welders did not get their pink slips because they didn't know Trig. Probably a more realistic answer is to have the gov't get out of the way - OSHA, IRS, Cap and Trade, FICA, NAFTA, their all job killers.

Maybe it's a sign of the times...

Toyota is closing the first manufacturing plant in History and it happens to be 15 minutes from where I live in California...

I know lots of folks that work there and have been invited to family day events at the plant... some of my friends have nearly 25 years there and because of them, the only new car bought by my parents was built there and I got to watch it being made...

Corolla Production is shifting to Canada... 5000 jobs at the plant plus a estimated 15,000 related jobs go with it per one news report...

Toyota's closing NUMMI to consolidate production. The main factor in this was the death of pointiac, who shared production there.

Toyota is faced with a huge overcapacity situitation between the NUMMI plant and their Texas Tundra plant. Also dont forget about the brand new Prius plant in Mississippi that hasnt built a car yet, and likely wont for the foreseeable future until gas prices rise.

So it makes sense to utilize the capacity of The texas plant to bring it up to full capacity (i believe they added 1000 jobs there) plus shift Corolla to the existing corolla /matrix plant in Ontario thats been making Corolla since 1988 and Matrix since 2002.

Throw into the mix that NUMMI was toyota's only union plant and the fact that its in california, with all their environmental regs plus overcapacity in texas, and it was a sensible move for toyota, plus it keeps Americans and Canadians working at Toyotas own plants. Its not like they shifted production to China and closed up their North American operations.

Cat_Driver: I dont know what type of product your making, but i have a hard time imagining that people in business would turn down any work in these times.

On another note, How are you going to feel when China starts manufacturing and selling your product for 1/4 the price since you were nice enough to provide them with the plans and know how to do it. Are the cost savings going to be worth it?

Dont say that you got patents, because you know what thats worth to China... nothing. If Honda, Apple, Cincinatti,Chevrolet,Microsoft.,......... on down the line cant stop the knockoffs how can you?

I get a kick out of when I hear the politicians all say the same thing and that is, "We need better educated workers - Our schools have to be better - We need job retraining."

A lot of these jobs went to Mexico - Are they better welders than we are?
Do they have better training then we do?

Is it the high school math teacher's fault the jobs went to Mexico?

The inverse is what is needed!

Workers that will work for minimum wages, not computer literate with MBAs that will never accept minimum wages.

Shucks we have to import Mexicans to pick crops.
Tomorrow we will need imported mechanics, cooks, drivers and on and on.

It soon will be such that no American will do any work that gets his hands dirty.

Guess we will simply need to trade in our cars as soon as the tires wear out or we need an oil change or exhaust replacement.

Got a few friends that have auto specialty shops, scary in that they simply cannot hire staff to do any of the messy jobs (engine overhaul, differential repairs, muffler work etc).
They all want computer diagnostics and rubber gloves!

Like in machine shops; if the lathe is not CadCam, nobody wants to work on it.
The aviation industry has to import Europeen machinists as they still know how to set up a lathes or milling machine.

We need workers that will be proud to have dirty hands!

Construction industry is on the right trac!

It's not that I disagree with the sentiment, but it is kinda funny coming from a Canadian....or are you a good ol' USA citizen living in Canada? Anyway, by my reckoning Mexicans are as "American" as Canadians, or for that matter as US citizens, America being a couple of fairly large continents.

Gotta to go rebuild a valve now. My momma still thinks I am an MD though I keep telling her it's a PhD, but sometimes I think I should have actually studied plumbing instead of just learning it on the job. Dirty hands come in all education levels.

I have tried to buy American when I can, but find it more and more difficult. It really blows my mind that almost all the fruit and vegetables come from Mexico or South America. When we can we visit the local farmer's markets, but these days there are more and more "organic" produce at prices that are way too high for my budget. Peaches in the local store were $0.49 a pound while at the farmer's market they wanted $2.50 for their organic peaches.

I'm hoping to buy a tractor soon, but the local dealer sells Korean tractors. the closest John Deere dealer is 50 miles away.

I have owned Ford cars, SUVs and trucks, but even many of them are not totally made in the U.S. I love my Ford 150's, but even some of their engines are made in Canada.

It's pretty sad when McDonalds buys foreign beef and advertises it as U.S. Angus beef, but they are mixing the U.S. beef with beef from New Zealand. I'm not a big fan of fast food anyway, but it is companies like this that drive me crazy.
